My Review of 'The Breaker Upperers'

A quirky movie from New Zealand with an interesting concept, but is it any good?

I have to say I didn't know what to expect when I saw the trailer for The Breaker Upperers. I didn't like the trailer that much, but then I saw that Taika Waititi had executive produced the movie. I think I have to discover what an executive producer does because this movie has very little resemblance of his movies in the past.

I was starting to think I was liking movies from New Zealand because of Taika's work with Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows. So, when I heard there was another quirky New Zealand movie with his name on it, I jumped at the chance to see it. Unfortunately, I don't think he had as much influence on the movie as I had hoped. I think some of the ending of this movie was similar to some of Taika's work, but the rest of the movie has no resemblance at all.

The Breaker Upperers is about Mel (played by Madelaine Sami) and Jen (played by Jackie Van Beek) who play best friends that work together. They basically get hired by cowards who can't break up their own relationships. Jen is a more conservative person, she's cold and collected and has everything planned. Meanwhile, Mel wants to make friends with everyone and have fun everywhere. They're an odd couple and their relationship works well. Each of the main actresses is good in their role, however, the supporting characters were pretty bad. Expect to see a ton of wooden acting with heavy winks to tell the audience to laugh. It kind of reminds me of kids acting in a school play trying to get laughs from the audience.

The main problem with a ton of these characters is that they continually make choices that don't logically make sense and just aggravates the heck out of me because of how dumb their decisions are. I really don't think people in New Zealand are dumb, but these characters are horribly dumb. Relationships are also being made constantly and some of them are so far-fetched that you kind of get totally thrown out of the realm of the movie. I understand that the absurdity of the situations is where the comedy is supposed to come from, but I felt as though I was taken outside of the movie and the atmosphere of the movie when I had to digest what had actually happened. It's that bad. I think maybe if these jokes were part of a discussion I could maybe see how it could be funny, but in a movie I don't feel that it works at all.

There's even a relationship past that gets brought up that made me think what the heck is going on? How could this even happen? This movie doesn't make sense to me at all! There's a lot of this and it really threw me off. This movie also has a ton of comedy based on awkwardness. Making fun of awkward situations has always been a thing, but lately, I haven't been understanding some of the levels of awkwardness in comedies. They get to the point of cringe and comfortableness. I think around the middle of the movie, I almost wanted to switch the movie or at least shut it off.

I guess I was a glutton for punishment because I decided to proceed with the movie and continue until the end. It got a little better close to the end, but not much better.

Overall, I would have to give this movie a 3 out of 10. I will not be watching this movie over again, and I highly suggest that you look for something other than this movie to spend your two hours. I don't wish the torture that I had to endure on anyone. I guess this is my charity work for the day by spreading the news that this movie sucks pretty bad.
