My Review of 'The Kominsky Method'

A story about a friendship between two old guys and how they realized their place in the world.

The Kominsky Method is about two old friends named Norman, played by Alan Arkin and Sandy played by Michael Douglas. Norman is an agent that has recently lost his wife and Sandy is his best friend who so happens to be an acting teacher. The relationship between the two friends is fun, layered but yet transparent.

Norman I guess would be seen as the successful friend. He's built a huge talent agency empire and had been lovingly married for over 40 years. This first season starts just as Norman's life starts to fall apart. His loving wife has passed away due to cancer and his junkie daughter has re-entered his life to ask for handouts. He really has no one to keep him company except for his best friend Sandy.

Sandy on the other hand has not been so successful. He's had three failed marriages in which two of his ex wives have taken much of his money from settlements. His acting career has never really taken off so he winds up as an acting teacher. Things are starting to look up for him as he's found a new relationship with one of his students and he has an ever so helpful loving daughter.

Each of these characters are apparently aware of their own vices and flaws. Norman knows that he is a bitter old man and Sandy takes some time but he finally realizes that he doesn't appreciate what's in front of him. Throughout the season we're reminded of these flaws in the characters with funny little anecdotes. I also found it hilarious as to how these old guys interact in today's modern world. There's a lot of nuances that will have everyone laughing because they will probably see their own grandparents doing something similar.

The journey these two go through for this first season is heartfelt and truly enjoyable to witness. Each of the characters in this series are portrayed amicably. I loved all of them. The minor characters within the series help the main characters realize maybe life isn't so bad. They also make them recognize what they have and what is important to them. The writers for this series did a great job in developing all of the characters and that's why it was such a joy to watch this series from start to finish.

The premise of the show is also a little different because usually we see characters developing into different characters as the season progresses but in this one they stay pretty much the same. The main characters just recognize their own flaws and try to rectify the errors in their ways whenever they recognize problems. These guys are senior citizens so there's really no changing their attitudes and points of views. They've seen everything and have made their minds up about life.

I like this different perspective on life. It's a perspective that we don't regularly see that often with our culture's obsession of youth. I thought that this was a gamble for Netflix to make but I forgot that they have another show called Grace and Frankie that is equally as great. Grace and Frankie must have become a hit for them to have green lit the Kominsky Method. I know that if you liked Grace and Frankie you'll really enjoy The Kominsky Method.

Overall I would say that this is kind of a sleeper hit. Much like Grace and Frankie, not a lot of people will talk about this series but if you are lucky enough to stumble upon it you'll likely binge watch the whole season. It has that much charm that you'll sit for hours watching it. This season of The Kominsky Method deserves a 9 out of 10.
