My Review of 'Uncle Drew'

A whole movie based on an old TV commercial? Who would have thought?

Back in 2012, there were these hilarious Pepsi commercials that had basketball star Kyrie Irving dress up as an old man schooling people at outdoor basketball courts. It was fairly popular back in the day and I remembered it being pretty fun.

In fact, it was so popular that it spawned a bunch of similar copycat YouTube videos like the Ronaldo old man soccer video, some old man bartendaz (a new work-out that uses your own body-weight with everyday play structures), old man parkour and the list goes on. I guess the joke is that we don't expect older citizens to be physically threatening.

Six years later they made a movie out of those old Pepsi commercials called "Uncle Drew." Uncle Drew happens to be the name of the character Kyrie Irving was portraying in those old Pepsi commercials.

The challenge to the studios would be how to make a 5-minute skit into a 2-hour long movie. Saturday Night Live has been doing it for years but we haven't seen something like this in a while. Hey they're starting to make movies based on board games like Battleship and Ouiji, how hard could this be?

So the main character in the movie Uncle Drew is actually a character named Dax played by Lil Rey Howery. This guy is a hustler trying to make the big bucks and this year he thinks he has a shot at making money because he has a star player in his local basketball team's roster to win a big basketball tournament called the Rucker. The Rucker is a legendary street basketball tournament held every year and the prize money has climbed significantly over the years.

Unfortunately for Dax, his life is on a downward spiral. He's been so busy focusing on winning this basketball tournament that he doesn't realize that he lives a very toxic life. His relationship with his girlfriend is a sham, he can barely live on the wages that he makes at his current job and even worse he's constantly harassed by a childhood bully. The childhood bully's name is Mookie and played by Nick Kroll. Mookie has an unhealthy obsession with Dax's life and has won the Rucker consecutively.

Obviously, Mookie steals all of Dax's players which forces Dax to look for a whole new team. No one wants to sign onto Dax's team but he years stories of a legendary basketball hero by the name of Uncle Drew. He's apprehensive at first but soon finds out that Uncle Drew is the real deal. Uncle Drew turns out to have many stipulations for him to come aboard. Dax is extremely desperate so he agrees to all of Uncle Drew's demands, little does Dax know this would put him on an adventure that he never expected.

There are a lot of basketball stars in this movie. They all performed perfectly for this movie. All of the characters were enjoyable to watch. This was a really fun movie that did not take itself seriously at all. It was very aware of what kind of movie it was and even made jokes commentating on things that each of them had worked on prior to the Uncle Drew movie. The laughs were constant and genuine. Some of the scenes were authentically warm and nice to see.

You can't go to this movie expecting a masterpiece. I thought the only people that would be able to enjoy this movie are the people that know the stars of the movie. So I asked my girlfriend to watch this movie with me. With some hesitation, she agreed to watch it but she actually enjoyed it as well. There weren't too many inside jokes or basketball references that she didn't understand the movie and she loved the comradery all of the characters had for each other.

Overall, I really liked this movie. I wouldn't say it's something I'd watch over and over again but I really had a great time watching this one and I think I would be able to watch this again with kids. I'll give this movie a 7 out of 10. It's something that will probably become something similar to the movie Like Mike or Thunderstruck. Movies that you enjoy don't watch for a long time and then have an unexplainable urge to re-watch again years later.
