My Review of "Wonder"

A family friendly movie that goes deeper than I thought it would.

I didn't really hear much about the movie, Wonder, when it first came out. I guess it's a lower budget movie with little money for advertising. There was barely any press, so it kind of slipped under the radar for me. Watching this movie blind was kind of refreshing, because I let the movie tell me what it's about and not have my own preconceived notion of how it will play out.

I'll spoil it a little by telling you what the movie is basically about. Wonder is about a boy named Auggie Pullman, played by Jacob Tremblay. When he was born he went through a number of medical conditions. Due to the enormous amount of medical misfortune he had when he was a baby, he's now heavily scarred. He has a great family, and life is good, but the family has to get on with their lives and they need Auggie to integrate into regular life. They can't have him live so isolated without making real friends and experience a real childhood. So, they decide to enroll him into a school. Everyone is worried about Auggie because of his facial deformities. What comes next, is a story of how he, and his family, dealt with the transition of him going to school.

We haven't really had a movie talk about these issues in a while. Once in a while we have these types of movies but I haven't seen it lately. It discusses about a lot of different things. How looks do make a difference in how we present ourselves to others, and how we think others perceive us. It goes on to talk about peer pressures and fitting in. It dives even deeper by talking about fitting into schools, friends, and family. They talk about a whole bunch of different issues that the family has to deal with. There are morality issues that deal with goals and doing what's you think is right. None of those answers are always easy. I found that this movie simplified some of the answers that they chose. It made the movie much easier to digest. This makes sense considering their target audience is probably a family friendly audience.

I'm glad that they asked all of these questions and made me question certain things as I was watching. It kept me engaged as a viewer. Due to the fact that all the answers were simplified, it does feel like a feel good movie. I think that's what it's meant to be. I felt compelled to cheer for Auggie, and his family members.

It's a great ride, but there are a few distractions. Some of the acting is not quite the best, but you shouldn't expect the best acting when the majority of the actors in this movie are children. There are a fair amount of predictable scenes, and there are some parts where you know the movie is trying hard to get to your emotions. At times, they try a little too hard, but there are times that it works really well.

Overall, I had a great time watching this movie, and I will probably watch it again, because I know some people that would love this movie. It's very uplifting and motivational if you're looking for that type of movie. I particularly like the fact that it was a family friendly movie that talks about moral judgement, and heavily focuses on different perspectives and dives deep into the characters. I'll give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. It was a really good time, and I really hope more people get a chance to see it. With bullying being a huge concern nowadays, it would seem that this movie came out at the right time. It's just too bad there was not enough advertising for it.
