Shows That I Either Treasure or Just Like for the Heck of It!

Hello and welcome to my first submission! This is your senpai reporting in, giving you all that’s cool about anime, Japan, and more!! Since this is my very first submission, I didn’t really have a big idea on what to write about so I guess I’ll just tell you my favorite anime.

If you couldn’t tell by my painfully obvious name, I LOVE ANIME!! I grew up with it for so long and it influenced me to become who I am today. I’ve seen shows of many different varieties, some were great, others could’ve done better, and some were okay. However, these top five shows have my vote as the best I’ve seen. Keep in mind that this is all opinionated and everyone is different. Maybe a show that I discuss here isn’t your favorite, that’s okay. I’m not here to force you into anything, only to share.

So, here we go!!

5. iDOLM@STER (2011)

I am such a HUGE fan of The IDOLM@STER franchise; the games are so cute, all the characters are so likeable and I’m just a big fan of Japanese idol culture and how it’s portrayed in anime. But, wait... if I like this franchise so much, why is this only number 5? Well, I give it props that it represents how hard it is to break out into the industry and each episode does have a legitimate conflict that needs resolving. My biggest problem are the characters themselves. That’s right, those likeable girls I mentioned about the game. They aren’t annoying per say, or at least as annoying as they are in the games. My problem is that they’re written completely opposite of how they are originally. Some are portrayed as selfish and mean-spirited, while others don’t even have much character development so they end up being pretty boring. If you want to check this one out, I recommend researching the games first so you can get a feel for the characters yourself and judge from there.

4. Strawberry Marshmallow (2005)

My favorite genre of anime and manga is slice-of-life because of how relaxing and often realistic the story can be. This anime series is not only those things, but it’s also funny and all-around just cute!! It centers around a college student named Nobue who is dragged into the crazy antics of her sister Chika and her friends. I praise this show for its atmosphere, comedic timing, and innocence. If I had to nitpick, however, it would be that sometimes the girls can be a little too bratty. But then again they are only 11-12-years-old so it’s pretty much expected. If you’re a fan of cutesy things, or slice-of-life, definitely give this one a watch!

3. Ojamajo Doremi Series (1999-2004)

As mentioned previously, I basically grew up watching anime and Ojamajo Doremi (called Magical DoReMi here in the U.S.) was one the first one I was exposed to. Watching it as a little kid, I loved how funny and colorful it was. After re-watching it years later knowing and understanding anime culture, not only did I still love it, but I appreciated it a lot more than when I was younger. This show is definitely not your typical kids’ show as it tackles a lot of mature subjects, from coping with divorced parents to even accepting that death is inevitable. This colorful, magical girl anime does not shy away from being serious and even dark when it needs to. All the characters are so likeable and relatable that every episode leaves you hoping they come out okay. And, being the sucker for the magical girl genre, the transformation sequences and the magic are a lot of fun to watch. Whether you like magical girls, kids’ anime, or even hint of drama, definitely give this one a watch and have your tissues ready.

2. Lucky Star (2007)

Yet another slice-of-life on our list. To put it simply, Lucky Star is what Strawberry Marshmallow would be if all the girls were in high school and they up the antics from 3 to 8. Why I love this so much is its portrayal of otakus and the anime culture, which is why this show is one of the most popular anime to date. Pop culture references, quoting other anime, just everything about this show screams "otaku." Being one myself, I always liked seeing other anime characters talk about the things that I’m passionate about. I do understand that otakus aren’t much appreciated in Japan, in fact "otaku" is used more as a derogatory term there. So, I appreciate the show for being light-hearted about the subject and even poking fun at it. Aside from that, comedy is great, the characters are a lot of fun to watch, and the atmosphere is very laid-back and enjoyable. HIghly recommend this one if you are a hardcore geek or just love slice-of-life.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA Brotherhood (2003-2010)

The most out-of-place show on this list and my all-time favorite. Not enough words can describe how much I love both the original and the remake. It’s dramatic, has a lot of adventure, funny, all the characters are likeable, just everything about this series is so perfect. This is one of those shows that I got obsessed with on accident, as I was just scrolling through Netflix one night when along came this gem. I expected myself to watch a few episodes and be through with it, but I ended up watching about 30 in one night. And honestly, if a show can hold be down watching episode after episode, it’s a yes in my book. While I do favor Brotherhood more as it goes by the manga to a T, the original left a mark on me as it was very dramatic and emotional. It’s also very gory and dark, other traits I also appreciate from anime when it’s done right. What else can i say? FMA will remain my number one for a very long time!
