One of the most intriguing Marvel series of them all, Inhumans promises to be a blockbuster hit. The first two episodes are even being first aired at IMAX cinemas worldwide! Filming is currently in progress on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where Marvel has transformed a 3,700-acre former Navy facility into a production base. But as filming continues, set photos are gradually making their way on to the Internet — and one has just teased a fascinating link to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D....

A Mysterious Statue

To the surprise of Oahu residents, over the weekend, the statue of Saint Damien on Beretania Street mysteriously disappeared. It was replaced by a mysterious monolith, whose surface was covered with strange markings. Local media were puzzled, with the local Khon2 network looking into it; they were soon able to confirm that the statue of Saint Damien was still there, it had simply been "covered up" for an unknown television location shot.

The writers over at Khon2 mustn't be #Marvel fans, because they didn't link this to Inhumans. Instead, they concluded:

"As for what show is it for, we weren’t told, but we do know that there are a few series in production on Oahu right now."

But to Marvel fans, of course, those markings are very familiar indeed. It didn't take long for social media to join the dots.

Back in #AgentsOfSHIELD Season 2, Phil Coulson was still reeling from learning that he'd been brought back from the dead thanks to alien blood. Unfortunately, all others who'd been injected with that blood had gone insane — and, crucially, their insanity had involved making mysterious carvings and etchings. The only way to protect them was to wipe their memories, which was exactly what Nick Fury had done to Coulson himself; he'd erased his memory of the whole project, ensuring the insanity never plagued him. Of course, Coulson became suspicious, and he learned the truth — thus exposing himself, once again, to the mysterious influence of the Kree blood...

Little by little, Season 2 explored the mystery of these carvings. Coulson ultimately managed to get a complete set, and for a while he thought these were words in an alien language. We eventually learned they were something completely different; a map, one that guided S.H.I.E.L.D. to an Inhuman city, and so began the process of unlocking the mysteries of the Inhumans.

Now let's turn our attention to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, which explored the mystery of the Monolith: a hunk of rock that turned out to be a spatial portal, able to transport matter from one world to another. Like the Inhumans themselves, the Monolith was created by the Kree. Is it possible that this is another Monolith, another portal? If so, the map on the side may well be for the city it takes you to, be it Attilan, or another secret Inhuman home.

What Does This Mean?

So far, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has just dabbled with Inhuman mythology; they've mostly dealt with oral traditions, passed on down the generations. As a result, there's no evidence even Inhuman leaders like Jiaying actually understood the power of the ancient Kree technology they possessed; even creatures like Hive had gradually become legends.

This, however, puts ancient Kree technology (and cartography) front-and-center of Inhumans. It suggests that we're now dealing with a group of Inhumans whose line can be easily traced all the way back to those first Kree experiments. That fits perfectly with what we already knew; after all, it's already been confirmed that at least some of the series is set on the Moon!

But this map offers a tantalizing hint that Inhumans ties in to the secret history of the #MCU. After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. already discovered the ruins of one ancient Inhuman city out there; is it possible there are others? And is it possible that some of them aren't abandoned, but are only isolationist? If so, this series could dramatically transform the MCU's status quo.

There's another possibility, though. In recent years, the comics have revealed that Earth wasn't the only planet where the Kree experimented with Inhumans; it's entirely possible that this map (and potential Monolith) actually leads to a distant world, and to an entirely alien race of Inhumans. I'm not expecting any of those races to be revealed in Inhumans Season 1, but we already know Marvel is hopeful for future seasons — according to some reports, they've given the Hawaiian Government assurances that they'll be filming on Oahu for years.

At the very least, it's great to see that the new Inhumans series will be steeped in the lore of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Back when Inhumans was planned to be a movie, one of our greatest concerns was just how Marvel would keep continuity between the two versions; but Marvel Entertainment clearly plans to tie the threads together as closely as possible. Meanwhile, though, these set photos have hinted at some pretty intriguing possibilities - of ancient lost cities, or of future seasons that introduce alien races...
