Netflix's Multi-Part Castlevania Series Will Drop in 2017, "Flip the Vampire Sub-Genre on Its Head"

In the world of #Netflix original content, the question lately has been "what's the next big challenge?" because quite honestly Netflix has been knocking it out of the park with their variety of high quality original content. We've seen everything from:

• Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and the upcoming Iron Fist.
• The OA: a compelling mystery surrounding a blind woman who disappears then returns to call herself The OA and shares her story with a cult of followers.
• Stranger Things: a sci-fi thriller that plays into the atmosphere films from the '80s by John Carpenter of Steven Spielberg.
• House of Cards: the massive political thriller starring Kevin Spacey that launched everything that Netflix has created since.

Yet, regardless of where you stand on any of the numerous original series available, it's safe to say that even Netflix is constantly looking for the next big thing.

And it sure looks like Netflix is setting the bar high by taking on the classic and beloved horror video game franchise, Castlevania.

What is Netflix planning?

Netflix has now announced the bulk of what they have planned for the upcoming year, and nestled in the glorious press release was this gem:

Other than this, we really don't know a whole lot about what's coming, but there are a few things to make note of in this single line of glorious news.

• Firstly, it's Castlevania. For the uninitiated, Castlevania is a video game franchise that follows the Belmont family, a clan of vampire hunters, and their eternal fight with #Dracula. The series debuted in 1986 and has received a fair amount of critical acclaim over the years, with the most going to Symphony of the Night on the #PlayStation.
• Secondly, it says Season 1 which means that there will likely be more #vampire awesomeness which leads into
• Thirdly, it says Part 1, which fits into a lot of news that has been hitting the internet over the last year or so. About a year ago, Adi Shankar took to Facebook telling the world the following

So, it sure looks like this won't be an animated version of Twilight. It will be dark and violent and if that wasn't enough to be excited about, remember that Shankar is known for producing Killing Them Softly, TheGrey and has two incredible adaptations under his belt of Punisher: Dirty Laundry and the incredibly gritty Power Rangers short below.

So it sure as hell seems as though Castlevania is in good hands and the name drops in Shankar's Facebook post were just the icing on the cake even if he did spell one name wrong.

Fred Seibert and Kevin Kolde are the two men behind Frederator Studios, and they have some awesome projects like Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents, Chalk Zone and My Life as a Teenage Robot in their collection.

What should we expect?

Based on who we know is attached to the product, and what Adi has said both on Facebook and to Collider, we're in store for something that will flip the recent script on Vampires.

We will likely see the min-series focus either on something completely untold, or build out of an already developed story like, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Adi's goal was to bring the hard-hitting anime style to America and be the first major adult anime series created for American audiences.

That may seem like a stretch considering the kid-friendly addition of Frederator Studios, so I'm leaning towards a toned down version of what Adi Shankar envisions and am imagining something more along the lines of The Boondocks rather than Tokyo Ghoul or Attack on Titan.
