New Logan Trailer Suggests That More Clawed Mutants Will Show Up

In case you missed the trailer drop last week, the second trailer for Logan debuted with quite a bit of new footage, including a few scenes of X-23 (Dafne Keen) in action for the first time.

X-23 a.k.a. Laura Kinney only sported her claws in a few scenes of the trailer but we should be ready for X-23 to steal the show. From the looks of it, the young X-23 is ready to outshine #Wolverine when it comes to ferocious slaughters of unwitting bad guys.

Apart from the approaching stardom of X-23, the first instance of #X23 extracting her claws from her fists was very exciting to see. However, the appearance of her claws now implies the existence of another clawed mutant in Logan, possibly Daken.

Who Is Attacking Wolverine?

Looking back at the first trailer for #Logan, there was a brief scene where Wolverine is being attacked by a clawed mutant. The assailant attacking Wolverine possesses at least six individual claws that we can assume are adamantium, since they didn't break upon impact with Wolverine's.

Most had guessed the image of Wolverine being attacked was by X-23, but now that we've seen X-23 brandish her claws for the first time, it's clear that she wasn't the one attacking Wolverine (she only has a maximum of four claws, whereas this image shows at least six).

X-23 Is Not the Clawed Mutant Attacking Wolverine

When comparing the two images, the claws attempting to impale Wolverine appear to be two sets of three-pronged claws, whereas X-23 only has a pair of claws on each hand. Note: X-23's claws are also much shorter in length than the ones nearly impaling Wolverine.

After comparing the two images, the conclusion is that there'll be at least one other clawed mutant introduced in Logan apart from X-23. Who that clawed mutant is is still to be determined, but the most plausible candidate is Daken.

In #Marvel comics, Daken is Wolverine's son and brandishes a set of claws identical to the claws in the image above. Now, there may not be enough time to develop a whole plot thread for Daken, considering the lengthiness of Daken's backstory in Marvel comics, but Daken could be rewritten for Logan, depicting him as one of the Weapon-X projects who came before X-23.

Are More Weapon-X Subjects Joining 'Logan'?

We need to remember that there were 22 other Weapon-X projects (with the exception of Wolverine and Deadpool) that came before X-23, and they might not all have been complete failures. This means any number of them could still be active and ready to go on missions. In that scenario, a Weapon-X clone like X-13 or X-15 could be sent out to recapture X-23 and kill Wolverine.

If we pair the image of Wolverine being attacked by a clawed mutant with the increased likeliness of a different Weapon-X clone being sent after them, it seems quite probable that a Daken-like clone will be on the hunt for Wolverine and X-23.

Who Will Wolverine Face Off With In the Final Act Of 'Logan'?

There is also the aspect of Wolverine needing a final adversary to fight in Logan, so the introduction of a worthy antithesis in the final act could be exactly what's about to take place. We all expect Logan to send Wolverine off with style, and the requirement for a fitting sendoff will have to depict Wolverine facing down one last villain.

Donald Pierce was presumed to be the main antagonist of Logan, but after seeing Wolverine and X-23 make quick work of his men, the final act will likely depict Wolverine facing off with another Weapon-X clone, produced by Dr. Xander Rice.

Dr. Xander Rice is the scientist in charge of the Weapon-X program in Logan. Rice is X-23's creator and is said to be developing more clones like X-23, but when X-23 escapes, he focuses on apprehending X-23, which is when Donald Pierce and his Reaver team are called in. Shortly after a brush with Wolverine and X-23, Donald Pierce appears to be no match for them. Since Pierce was unsuccessful, Rice is going to have to resort to another plan of action, one that'll require more Weapon-X clones be let loose.

When that happens, Wolverine and X-23 will likely be faced with multiple clawed mutants trying to kill them, including one mutant who could be Daken, from Marvel comics.

Apart from Daken, there are several other Weapon-X subjects that could also believably make an appearance in the final act of Logan. Here are three possible Weapon-X subjects that could also be introduced.

Ultimaton: Weapon XV (15)

The culmination of the Weapon-Plus program, Ultimaton possessed an indestructible body with a capacity to obliterate almost any adversary. The living weapon, Ultimaton was made up of Sentinel technology in an environment specifically developed for the creation of supersoldiers known as The World.

Fantomex: Weapon XIII (13)

As part of the mutant hunting group created in the pocket universe The World, Fantomex was forced into the Weapon Plus program after his DNA was infected with nano-technology, which made him an ideal candidate for the program. Fantomex remained with Weapon Plus until he found an opportunity to escape during a plane crash.

Huntsman: Weapon XII (12)

Not much is known of the Huntsman, other than he's a Weapon Plus subject that didn't amount to much. His powers range from superhuman strength and endurance to voluntary excretion of microorganisms that can infect victims from a variety of distances. He's more feral than anything, and possesses elongated claws. The Huntsman may not be the clawed mutant seen attacking Wolverine but he'd sure put up a decent fight against Wolverine regardless.
