New Saiyans, New Powers, Lower Positions

Toriyama’s Careless of Non-Main Characters

The few times Goten and Trunks has something to do on the Dragon Ball franchise.

After watching Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, I realize that there have been characters that are created have the ability to gain more power in a quick time span than the main character Son Goku. The ones that usually do this are new Saiyans that are introduced from many series or antagonist ready to face Goku in a fight. This got me thinking about four particular Saiyans. These Saiyans may have been promised to have potential from the beginning when they were first introduced. Their debut may have thrown off people who have power scale characters for many years suddenly been caught off guard by how rapid their power grew. The characters I’m referring to in particular are Trunks and Goten from Dragon Ball Z, Caulifla and Kale from Dragon Ball Super.

When these characters were introduced, they were able to gain so much in a short time span. Goten and Trunks were able to achieve Super Saiyan when they were seven to eight years old, which Vegeta, Trunks father, commented on how the transformation of a Super Saiyan is now a child's plaything. It was comedic to see it, but it seems to also downplay the form that Goku used to defeat the Dragon Ball franchise's well known villain Frieza. For Caulifla and Kale, they were able to achieved Super Saiyan after being told about its whereabouts from Cabba, another fellow Saiyan that was the first in Universe 6 to turn Super Saiyan after Vegeta taught him. Strange enough, he describes it as having a tingling sensation on the back, which he explains to Caulifla and Kale to focus on it to turn Super Saiyan. This made fans upset that the transform they grew up was explain as a tingling sensations, which the series has never mentioned when Goku first became Super Saiyan. Not only that, but Caulifla was able to achieved Super Saiyan Two in a matter of minutes after gaining the first form. As for Kale, she was inspired by Broly, which give people a better understanding of how insanely powerful she can be. Now after the Broly movie from January 2019 has been released, it seems a waste to create her character. Luckily, she’s not a copy as she does have her own personality and character that cares about Caulifla and can control her transformation.

What makes them even more unique is that they are the first in their respective universes to use fusion. Goten and Trunks are able to do the Fusion dance while Caulifla and Kale are able to use the Potaro Earring to fuse. The fusion characters, Gotenks and Kefla, are also similar in how they can rapid increase their power. Gotenks became Super Saiyan Three while battling Super Buu, while Kefla became Super Saiyan Two while battling Goku in almost all of his forms. So, what does this mean?

To explain this, it means that Akira Toriyama mostly created these characters to make them a barrier to a villain or the heroes. In boxing terms, they are mostly the under-card. They are created to entertain and awe us right before the main event occurs. This allows the fans to bring expectation higher for the main charterers and main opponent to battle each other so Akira Toriyama or Toei Animation will bring their A-game. If you take a look of this, Goten and Trunks are now taking in minor characters that are just there in the Super series as comedic relief characters. As for Caulifla and Kale, they are now just characters waiting to achieve new powers, but they aren't as powerful as Goku or Vegeta.

These characters have potential, but due to Universe 6's Saiyan evolution, Caulifla and Kale are actually stronger than Goten and Trunks, and for fusion, Kefla is stronger than Gotenks. But as long as Goku and Vegeta are present, they won't be able to be reaching the top charts of the power scale. Maybe in time these characters could be focus more and give a chance to shine once again to show they can handle beating up bad guys.
