Beauty and the Beast may be one of the most famous fairy tales of all time, with many retellings even outside of the #Disney realm, but the live-action version that Disney has created for us is taking it one step further, and this time, the new version of a tale as old as time is pretty great: Turns out, Belle will be even more of an outcast as it will be she who is the inventor, and not her father in this retelling.

Emma Watson talked about this unique twist stating that:

"In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle. I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’ So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

It makes sense given that, at least in the animated version of #BeautyAndTheBeast, they did treat her very oddly in the village simply for being someone who reads. It makes more narrative sense to update it so that she is an inventor. Maybe there's a little oddity that comes with it, making her stand out more in the crowd. It also would explain her no-nonsense hair style, pulled back in a ponytail. It appears that Maurice, her father, still has his own way with mechanics, however.

He is also an inventor, making music boxes that represent different lands in the hopes of keeping Belle with him instead of wanting to go off on her own adventures. It is his way of giving her what she wants without letting her go free. It is also a nice homage to the original ideas for the animated version, as Chip was originally meant to be a music box.

It should be interesting to see how she makes her way to the castle in this version, since the whole reason she ended up at the castle in the animated version was that Maurice got lost on his way to the fair. Perhaps the movie will take a page from the original story, and he went traveling and tried to get the Enchanted Rose from the Beast to bring back to Belle, only to be threatened. Then maybe she decides to go back to the castle instead of her father.

This movie appears to have all the magic and charm of the original, and it will be interesting to see how they handle this — inventive — new twist!
