Every fortnight I will post a list of indie films that are not only brand new to Netflix, but brand new in general (released less than a year ago), so you can binge all the latest indies in your living room!

The following films have been added in the first fortnight of April:

'#Roxy'

  • Added to Netflix: April 10, 2019
  • Released: October 2018
  • Available: USA

Teenager Cyrus has a big crush, but also a big problem—his nose. He wants to ask out fellow student Roxy, but because of the size of his nose, he is too embarrassed to try. Cyrus' friend (and heartthrob) Christian is also after Roxy but doesn't know how to talk to women, so he seeks Cyrus' help woo her via social media. A playful, witty high school comedy which is a modern embodiment of the 1987 Steve Martin classic Roxanne.

A movie adaptation of the novel of the same name, The Silence tells the story of a family who move to the countryside to escape winged monsters, named vesps, who locate their pray by sound. The film’s main focus is Ally, the teenage daughter in the family, who lost her hearing in a car accident. Her deafness is an advantage to the family as they have learnt to live and communicate with her in silence. However, this attracts unwanted attention from a religious cult, who try to recruit Ally in order to become more powerful. The film is produced by Constantin Film, a German independent filmmaking company, and it will ring bells with fans of A Quiet Place.

Brie Larson’s directorial debut, Unicorn Store, is a quirky comedy about Kit, a young aspiring artist who realizes she has to put her dream job idea on hold and get an office job to get by in the real world. However, her ordinary office life grinds to a halt when she receives an invite to “The Store”—her curiosity takes her there, and she meets “The Salesman” (none other than Samuel L. Jackson), who tells her that he can sell her a Unicorn. Kit follows the steps proposed so that she can own one, and learns about herself along the way. A whimsical indie for the old and young.

If you're up for a feel-good film tonight, Hearts Beat Loud is a good choice.
