No Bay, No How: Michael Bay Says He Won't Direct A Marvel Film

Oh, mighty Lord Bay, we are not worthy of your talents, please take mercy on us humble movie viewers. As the Marvel and DC franchises lock horns in the box office battles, don't expect Michael Bay's Transformers to get involved with any superhero civil wars. It looks like after he has finished doing whatever it is #MichaelBay does with #Transformers, he won't be setting his sights on the #MCU (thankfully).

What MCU Lookin' At?

While promoting his upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight, Bay fired shots at our favorite superhero directors:

“I don’t ever wanna take someone like a third of something or second of something. I gotta do my own thing...you talk to Ridley Scott, one our favorite things to do is to create the world. Steven Spielberg, create the world. That is what it’s about. If I were to do something I would have to redo it my way.”

You kind of get what he means, he wants the ability to create the whole puzzle not just a piece, but #Marvel fans will undoubtedly take it a different way. Given Bay's notorious ego, it could be argued that he sees making a Marvel or #DC film as beneath him.

It is slightly unfair to lump all the directors as just cogs in the machine. Despite effectively being team up films, Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers, and James Gunn managed to add their own unique takes on The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, and Guardians of the Galaxy while still making them fit with the MCU.

Secondly, yes Ridley Scott is seen as the father of the Alien franchise, but that isn't to say there are sometimes better people out there. If you look at James Cameron's Aliens, it is one of the best sequels out there and easily eclipses Scott's Prometheus (which I also love). Just because you started a franchise doesn't mean you can mark your territory on it forever. I am sure the Russo brothers wouldn't have had Frenzy the transforming boombox hanging around on Air Force One.

That being said, Bay apparently doesn't wish any ill on #superhero films, although he did criticize them for being much of a muchness:

"I really liked Civil War. like a lot of the Marvel movies. When I saw Iron Man, it broke a lot of new ground for me, and it was a great character. Funny, witty, I liked that about it...I wonder where [superhero movies] are going to go. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War had almost the same setup."

There is no denying that despite being critically panned, the Transformers mean big business. The current five movies rank 10th on the world's highest-grossing franchises, while two of the films have passed the $1 billion mark. Bay claims that The Last Knight will be his final entry, so doesn't realize that with more Transformers scheduled beyond 2017, and a sixth entry in 2019, he is effectively just another part of the Transformers machine.

What does life after Optimus Prime hold though? The scary thought is that Bay doesn't categorically say no to turning his hands to #comicbook heroes. Who knows, if there was a full reboot of either DC or Marvel, and Bay could start from the ground up, sounds like he would be on board. Cue Megan Fox as Wonder Woman or transforming Iron Man suits — God help us all!
