No, Tom Holland Did NOT Just Confirm That He's Due To Appear In 'Venom'

In a surprising twist, Sony's Venom movie — which stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the classic Venom — will actually be part of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a result, at a recent press junket, Tom Holland (a.k.a. #SpiderMan) was asked what he thought about the project.

And this is where things went wrong. Because a clumsy transcript of his comments — going viral today — is leading a lot of fans to the wrong conclusion...

What Tom Holland Actually Said

Let's start with the video. In this clip, Holland explains why he's excited for the film, and explains that — so far as he knows — he's not involved in the project. Understandably, he's a little busy right now. Spider-Man: Homecoming is about to release, he's filming Avengers: Infinity War, and naturally he'll then be moving on to the Homecoming sequel.

As he puts it:

"It's very exciting. I think Tom Hardy will really play that character with a lot of energy, a lot of life, and it could be a very cool movie. It's not something that I know I will be involved in. As of now, I'm just focusing on Spider-Man 1 and just a little bit of Avengers, but yeah, I don't know anything about that movie."

Somewhere along the way, though, that quote's gotten garbled.

Here's What's Being Reported

Someone's made a bad transcript, and countless websites are picking it up. According to these inaccurate transcripts, Tom Holland said:

"It's an awesome thing that I know I will be involved in. As of now, I'm just focusing on Spider-Man 1 and just a little bit of Avengers, but yeah, I don't know anything about that movie."

Can you see the difference? Tom Holland actually said, "It's not something that I know I will be involved in." The transcript says, "It's an awesome thing that I know I will be involved in."

I don't blame someone for getting it wrong; Tom Holland's got a bad microphone. Still, this transcript is now going around the Internet, and has been published by a lot of major sites (let's not name names). Understandably, Spider-Man fans are reading it and walking away convinced Tom Holland has just said he's in Venom.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but that's not what Tom Holland said. In reality, Holland's hectic schedule makes it very unlikely he'll have the time to film any major scenes in Venom; the movie's due out in October 2018, and his schedule is pretty locked up with different Spider-Man and Avengers films over the next year or two. It's possible Holland will find time to film a small scene, but that's the best we can expect.
