It looks like it definitely won't be third time lucky for Marvel's Fantastic Four, and the comic book powerhouse is reaffirming to its legions of fans that we will NOT be bringing Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, or Sue and Johnny Storm to a cinema near you. With Disney's D23 heralded as a roaring success and one big hype machine for the likes of #InfinityWar, the state of the #FantasticFour cast a shadow over proceedings. After being frequently badgered by journalists, #KevinFeige has once again stamped a big red cross on the chances of a Fantastic Four revival.

Please sir, can I have some 'Four'?

D23 would've seemed like the perfect time to announce the return of the team to the bosom of the #MCU, but the expo came and went, leaving the Fantastic Four as invisible as Sue Storm herself. After originally branding the franchise with a "never say never" mentality, Feige has spoken to Yahoo! to put the final nail in the coffin. In regard to stealing the Fantastic Four back from Fox, Feige told the site:

“I’ve been at Marvel for 17 years. There are certainly no plans whatsoever for that. But too many amazing things have happened over the past 17 years for me ever say never. But for now, nothing.”

Although some still hold out for a Silver Surfer lining of hope, Feige went on to completely deflate the balloon of expectation that Reed could rub shoulders with Iron Man. I don't know about you, but these odds don't sound so great:

"There's a chance that aliens could come down from the sky right now. And we'll use them in the movie to save money on visual effects."

The Marvel bigwig had previously said there was no "weirdness" between Disney and Fox, but it certainly seems less amicable than the Disney/Sony relationship. Only recently we have seen the fruits of their labors as Spider-Man: Homecoming united the fractured arms of the Spider-Man legacy and wiped the floor with the maligned Andrew Garfield era. As the MCU branch of Spider-Man moves in one direction, both studios seem relatively content with Sony developing its own villainverse with the likes of Venom and Silver and Black.

Reed It and Weep

Although Fox and Disney could technically hammer out a deal to have the Fantastic Four appear in the two-part Avengers saga, you can only imagine the cost and logistical nightmare of doing so. Given that Infinity War is shaping up to be the most expensive movie ever made, you can't really blame the MCU for counting its coppers right about now.

It is certainly a tragic state of affairs for the first ensemble team to ever grace the pages of comic books, but after two failed Fantastic Four franchises, can you really blame Feige and co. for putting the quintet on the back burner? The MCU has an almost unbreakable run of luck with its superhero films, so dodging the curse of the Four could be a wise move. However, given the way in which the MCU has cleverly weaved an interlocking tapestry of heroes and villains across its slate, it is a shame we won't be able to explore the Fantastic Four's influence on the history of comic books.

With the spectacular bombing of 2015's Fant4stic, Fox HAS to put a Fantastic Four film into production every number of years or face losing the rights. With recent rumors of a film focusing on the children of Reed and Sue, it looks like Fox is still pushing forward with a franchise that no one really wants to see. Now, and with a whole decade of MCU already under our belt, you can't help but feel there are four superhero-shaped holes staring us right in the face. Why can't everybody just play nice and share their toys?
