One Thing You Never Knew About "Sailor Moon"

The Original Story of the "Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie"

The Sailor Moon franchise is still growing even nowadays, and the magical girls fighting for love and justice by moonlight are extremely popular all over the world.

Despite the two animation series', numerous musicals, and a live action adaptation, Sailor Moon has three anime movies: R, S and SuperS.

Fans of the series might have watched them all and they think they know the storyline of each, including Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie. Partly, that might be true. Let's see what it the movie is about.

The soldiers face a huge fight because of an evil queen who keeps kidnapping children. Soon, Chibimoon falls into the hands of the queen and the woman continues to collect the energy of dreams, making the dream hole bigger. Our heroes need to defeat her in order to stop the earth from being absorbed.

Yes, this is the story that was animated, and eventually made it to the screen, but not many people know that the original script and concept was something completely different.

What I share here with you is all official. It might sound like a fanfiction but it is one hundred percent legit. The information was said by director Kunihiko Ikuhara in several interviews. The latest mention of it was during a speech he made about his work regarding Shoujo Kakumei Utena. The first article is translated into English—just search "SuperS movie Ikuhara" to find it on the net. The second material is in Japanese, and as far as I know it has not been translated yet. However, if you know the language search for the keyword "Uranus no hanayome" (bride of Uranus) and it will lead you to the article.

The reason it has never made it to the screen was due to the fact that, even though they wanted to create a unique experience, the storyline was way too far from the original Sailor Moon universe. It would have been a completely different setting and independent of the series more than they could allow themselves to actually do.

Some of you might stare confused at the screen when reading the bride of Uranus. Indeed, Uranus refers to the soldier Sailor Uranus and the bride, yes you got it right, Princess Neptune.

So wait, you might ask, is Sailor Uranus a boy?!

Let me talk briefly about those two characters, just to set things straight. Straight, huh?

There were several theories, lies, and censorship regarding those two ladies, one worse than the other. An old fansite came up with the story of Prince Uranus being in love with Princess Neptune but he died and his soul got transferred into his twin sister Haruka. This is completely made up, there was never such a thing as Prince Uranus. Sailor Uranus in her past life was the ruler of her planet as a princess. As the creator Naoko Takeuchi stated black and white, Sailor Uranus/Haruka Tenou was, is and always will be a woman.

Dressing and behaving like a boy most of the time will not make her turn into one. Some people who insist Tenou is a man always quote Neptune who says in the manga "Uranus is both man and woman, has the strength of both." This sentence according to the creator of the whole franchise doesn't have to be taken literally. Uranus is a strong woman who has the characteristics and power of both genders but it doesn't mean her physically being a boy in her human form.

It is also stated that those two are not just partners and good friends but a romantically involved lesbian couple. Several countries found it offending and changed the setting. Some portrayed Haruka as a male who pretended to be Michiru's lover to hide their true identities, but North America went to the extent of completely rewriting their relationship making them be cousins. Although they only kiss in the musical version and not in the animation, they have scenes where do things that friends or cousins don't. Writing out their adult conversations might be easy, but it is not enough to make all pieces of evidence of the true nature of their relationship disappear. Their skinship and looks to each other caused confusion among misled fans, making the couple appear not only homosexual, but incestuous as well.

They have never married in any versions, but I am not in the place to question the director's phrase "Uranus' bride." He knows it better and, if you ask me, it sounds just about right.

Although it was necessary to clarify this relationship before we go into the movie content, it's enough of talking about the background of the characters. Let's move on to the original topic.

The real synopsis of the SuperS movie was the following:

Uranus' bride, Neptune gets captured in the castle, named "End of the World," cursed into an eternal sleep. In order to save her, Uranus has to gather the three talismans, which are in the possession of other sailor soldiers (not specified who) and use them to wake her bride up. However, if she tries, the earth or even the whole universe will be destroyed. Sailor Moon knows this, and with the help of Pegasus she takes on the mission to try to stop Uranus. Ikuhara revealed the peak of the movie would have been a "space rodeo." Uranus would have had a black colored pegasus, and Moon would chase her with her white colored one until the "End of the World".

Exciting, isn't it? It might be a little cliche with the sleeping princess, but this time it wouldn't be a prince saving the damsel in distress. So much for the typical prince on a white horse image. For Sailor Neptune, it is a princess on a black horse and this would have made the story quite unique and surely one of a legend in the yuri fandom.

This is everything in the movie that had been revealed, and, being a fan of that duo, I personally am very sad it never made it to the big screen. True, it would have really been far from the original story of the series. Sailor Moon and her friends never had the talismans and a black Pegasus never appeared during the five arcs.

However, I am sure some of you Outer fans out there wouldn't have minded it one bit.

Parts of the synopsis were added into Shoujo Kakumei Utena movie but, even if you watch it, the main storyline is different.

Sailor Moon is still ongoing, with the next season of Sailor Moon crystal on the way and next musical supposed to be announced for next year.

However, sadly, there is no chance for this movie to ever make it to reality I suppose.

Shame, isn't it? I would have been thrilled to see an angry Uranus on a black Pegasus shouting, "Give my fiancee back!"
