The Shows We Have Been Hearing About and Can't Wait Until They Open

Since the 2017 Tony awards aired in June, we have been looking forward to what this new season of broadway musicals and plays will bring.

Here are some of the most anticipated (in my book)!

1) Mean Girls The Musical

The super fans have been wearing pink since the 2004 film. Now you only have to wait a little bit longer for this gem to come out. With a book by Tina Fey, we are definitely looking forward to some witty, sarcastic dialogue. But what will the songs be like? With inspiration like the whole tables of the cafeteria scene, we are hoping for some comedic lyrical gold!

This show is set for preview starting March 12, 2018, with an opening date of April 8, 2018. The show will take place at August Wilson Theatre in New York.

2) Frozen the Broadway Musical

Do you wanna build a snowman? Lots of children (and myself) have wanted to since the movie came out. The musical will have new songs. And according to the reviews from the out of town trials in Denver, the new songs are worth the wait.

With the opportunity for new songs we are looking forward to getting a deeper look inside the minds of all of these lovable characters.

You can see this Disney production at the St. James Theatre in previews starting Feb. 22, 2018, with an opening date of March 22, 2018!

3) The Band's Visit: A New Musical

This is one that I was unaware of until it came up in my playbill newsletter. But after reading about it, I think it will be a great unexpected hit!

Washington Post also thinks so!

For those that don't know what this is about heres the jist: “an Egyptian Police Band arrives in Israel to play a concert. After a mix-up at the border, they are sent to a remote village in the middle of the desert. With no bus until morning and no hotel in sight, these unlikely travelers are taken in by the locals. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways.”

Sounds cool to me!

4) The Iceman Cometh

This is a revival of a play by Eugene O'neill's play, originally written in 1939. It is a limited 14 week engagement.

The play focuses on a group of people, alcoholics, misfits, and prostitutes. They all talk endlessly their dreams for they lives, but yet never act on them. Washington will play Hickey, a traveling salesman, who makes it his mission to take away all their crazy pipe dreams.

5) Meteor Shower

The amazingly funny Steve Martin, who gave us the musical Bright Star, has a new play for us. Meteor Shower is set in 1993. Two couples gather to watch a meteor shower in Ojai, California. The two couples end up in a desperate marital debate, with rocks being thrown not only in the sky.

Also this play is going to star the hilarious Amy Schumer. Her comedy specials have made our sides split, now she will be gracing the broadway stage.

6) Spongebob Squarepants The Musical

Who lives on the stage of the Palace Theatre? Spongebob Squarepants. This bikini bottom musical will open on December 4, 2017. With the fate of Bikini Bottom hanging on the brink, the team tries to figure out how to save their precious home. Just when they they there is no hope, an unlikely hero appears. With songs by song big name celebrities like Steve Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, and Sara Bareilles, this musical is sure to appeal to all!

Well, there you have it. A few of the new shows coming to broadway the I am most excited about. Broadway is always coming up with new shows or revivals of shows that will dazzle and captivate. Here are a new honablable mentions that I'm eagerly awaiting more information about; The Devil Wears Prada, Half-Time, The Prom, My Fair Lady, Roman Holiday, and To Kill A Mocking Bird.

Happy Theatre-Going!!
