Opinion: 'Deadpool 2' Is a Love Story as Well

Deadpool 2 has come out in theatres and it is doing pretty amazing. It passed the 700 million mark in the box office and it’s still going strong. The sequel is full of witty quips, violent fights, and Josh Brolin. I had to mention Josh Brolin because I truly feel like his performance really brings the film together.

Anyways, enough of that. Let’s get into what we’re all here for. Just a warning—this post is full of spoilers.

In the beginning of the film, Wade breaks into a warehouse looking for some criminal and the criminal escapes, so he goes home. Wade is with Vanessa and he finds out that she wants to get pregnant. Yay! Family! Love! Happiness! Until a bunch of criminals run up in his house and inevitably kill Vanessa. And there you have it. The hero’s motivation. This is a tired trope in many movies where the writers will kill off the titular female character, who is usually the love interest, so that the main character, who is usually a man, can have a reason to proceed with his mission. Now that Vanessa is dead, Wade tries to kill himself by blowing his body up into a million pieces, but he is put back together by Colossus. While he is recovering at the X-Mansion, there is an incident at a local orphanage. Enter Russell Collins—a young, unstable mutant who will soon be known as Firefist. Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus are there to help calm Russell down, but Deadpool suspects Russell was abused by some of his caretakers at the orphanage and kills one of them. He and Russell are then arrested and taken to the Ice Box, which is a secure prison in the middle of nowhere. Russell and Deadpool were also restrained with collars that repressed their powers. Enter Cable—a man who has traveled in time to kill Russell because in the future Russell becomes even more unstable and ends up killing Cable’s wife and daughter. Cable tries to kill Russell, but Wade attempts to defend Russell. Cable takes Vanessa’s token from Wade and Wade forces him and Collins to escape.

Listen, the movie is like two hours long. I’m not going to summarize the whole fucking thing. I’m just going to skip to the end where Deadpool, Cable, Colossus, and Domino (who is what’s left of the X-Force because everyone else died) go to the orphanage where they think Russell will kill the headmaster, thus leading him down the path where he kills Cable’s family. In order to save Russell’s life, Deadpool jumps in front of a bullet that Cable shot at Russell’s heart. Deadpool (wearing the aforementioned collar) dies so that Russell can learn about human kindness and Wade is reunited with Vanessa in the afterlife. You think it’s going to end there, right? Wrong bitch! Cable uses his time travel device to go back in time just before they try to stop Russell and puts Vanessa’s token back in his front pocket, which will stop Cable’s bullet from killing Deadpool.

HOLY SHIT!

Now, I am a huge fan of Deadpool and I really like Deadpool 2. And I get it if you don’t understand why Deadpool 2 is also a love story since his girlfriend died in the beginning of the movie. But you gotta see it. It is right in front of your eyes. Deadpool and Cable. That is the love story.

Here me out. Deadpool is a pansexual hero. It has been confirmed. But he never really has any non-heterosexual experiences in either of the movies. Let’s stop beating around the bush and give the people what we fucking deserve. A gay love/sex scene in a superhero movie. Marvel movies always do outstanding in the box office and many people watch them. Moreover, big budget movies love to give queer representation without actually giving queer representation. They love to say that a certain character is gay, bisexual or pansexual, but they never show you that in the movie. Or they reveal the character’s sexual orientation after the movie is already out. You have no way of knowing this for sure because it’s not like they would actually show a man kissing a man or a woman kissing a woman. You know why they won’t do that? Because they are cowards.

But Deadpool is different. It’s edgy and meta. It constantly trolls us and makes jokes about the Marvel and DC universe. It is a hilarious summer blockbuster that deserves a gay romance. We all deserve one.

If I may be frank, there are very few LGBTQ movies that come out and many of those that do are independent films. Yes, there is Love, Simon, Call Me By Your Name, and Moonlight, but those are the only gay romance movies that most can list. And most people didn’t even see these movies when they came out in theatres, which is what shows studios that people want to see LGBT-themed films. If you watch the LGBT films available on Netflix, you notice that they all involve cheating, death, somebody being outed, and it leads to their life falling apart. As a queer person myself, I want a movie that includes a non-heterosexual romance that doesn’t end in a garbage fire. I would also like to add that Josh Brolin has said in practically every interview during the Deadpool 2 press tour that he has been a huge fan of Ryan since The Proposal. He constantly gushes about how handsome, rugged, and talented Ryan is. I don’t know what else to call that, but fate knocking on Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese's door saying MAKE IT HAPPEN YOU FUCKING COWARDS!!
