Let's face it: after the release of that epic trailer, there's only one subject superhero fans are talking about right now. Our first look at Spider-Man: Homecoming has left fans salivating in anticipation. From hilarious comedy to a truly terrifying opponent, Homecoming looks set to be the #SpiderMan movie we've waited a decade for. What's more, the dynamic between Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark promises to be superb.

But what will Spider-Man's Homecoming arc look like? What is the Vulture's goal? How will Peter develop as a character, never mind as a superhero, over the course of this film? The trailer may reveal more than you thought...

Borrowing a trick from Dan Slott's recent comics, the Spider-Man costume of Homecoming — designed by Tony Stark himself — looks set to have a lot of gadgets in it. Last week, we got particularly excited about the web-wings that we glimpsed in the teaser — but in USA Today, Kevin Feige revealed that the costume has a lot more tricks up its sleeve...

"[That costume] can do a lot more than [Peter] even realizes right now... You begin to see just how much Tony Stark loves bells and whistles."

As exciting as that may be, I don't want us to get a position where Spider-Man is effectively standing on Tony Stark's shoulders. Ultimately, it can't be Tony Stark's toys that save the day; it has to be Peter Parker himself.

And if the trailer's anything to go by, that's the ultimate arc that Homecoming explores.

Friends and Family in Peril

The trailer reveals a battle that takes a classic Spider-Man twist, with his friends and family — particularly Marisa Tomei's Aunt May — in deadly danger. As comic book fans know all too well, Spider-Man's always had a habit of making his villains mad. The Vulture looks no different, and as a result, Peter's friends and family wind up in the firing line.

Meanwhile, as I discussed in an earlier post, we know that Tony Stark is looking at Spider-Man as the potential 'next Avenger'. As such, he's acting as a sort of mentor figure for Peter, hoping to steer the kid in a direction that aligns him with the Avengers. Bringing these two threads together, Peter must face a very personal threat at a time when his mentor's eyes are fixed upon him.

The Final Battle

Most excitingly, though, the trailer teases a brutal battle between Spider-Man and the Vulture — one in which Peter has ditched the "bells and whistles" costume Tony Stark gave him. Maybe the costume had some gadgets that Peter wasn't so keen on — say, a homing device? Maybe, as in the comics, the costume Tony Stark has given him includes an option to restrict Peter's movements? With villains like Michael Chernus's Tinkerer involved, that kind of functionality could easily be turned against the Webhead.

Whatever the reason, we know that we see Peter back in his old outfit. That means that the final battle between Spider-Man and the Vulture is unlikely to depend on Tony Stark's technology; instead, Spider-Man must prove himself, standing purely upon his own powers, abilities, personality, and intelligence. That's the only way to get fans to truly accept Tom Holland's Spider-Man as the legend he promises to be!

Spider-Man: Homecoming looks set to be one of the strongest films in the #MCU to date, facing the latest incarnation of the wall-crawler into head-on collision with an ominous threat. He has a lot to prove — to himself, to the viewers, and to Tony Stark too. Let's see how it goes!
