Season 7 of Game of Thrones has arrived, and so far it's been full of everything that fans have hoped for. As we look forward to the season and eventually series finale, fans are starting to wonder what's next for the lands of Westeros? We know that HBO is planning several spinoff series, but beyond that we're left in the dark waiting to learn what's next. Well, we may finally have our answer thanks to a quick update from the acclaimed author himself, George R.R. Martin.

Whether you've read a single page from Martin's epic fantasy or not, you've probably heard some of the rumors about how he is progressing in finishing the long-awaited sixth novel, The Winds of Winter. Fans have been waiting over six years since the last novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series upon which #GameofThrones is based, but it looks as though we won't need to wait much longer for a few new stories.

In Martin's Livejournal update, he spoke to the rumors that he was finished with The Winds of Winter but the most exciting news was that he has a new story to tell with the announced two-volume history of the Targaryen kings titled Fire and Blood. According to Martin, there was so much content that the decision was made to split it into two books, with the first already being mapped:

The first of those will cover the history of Westeros from Aegon's Conquest up to and through the regency of the boy king Aegon III (the Dragonbane). That one is largely written, and will include (for the first time) a complete detailed history of the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons. My stories in DANGEROUS WOMEN ("The Princess and the Queen") and ROGUES ("The Rogue Prince") were abridged versions of the same histories.

While there isn't a set publication date, #GeorgeRRMartin hopes the story will be hitting shelves in late 2018 or early 2019. But no worries to those of you wondering about Winds of Winter: Martin assured fans that it's very likely that it hits shelves even before the first volume of Fire and Blood:

Whether WINDS or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two.

With the award-winning show overtaking the novels, fans are getting antsy to learn what Martin has on the pages of his new books, as it could give us a clue as to what happens when the White Walkers arrive. But now fans have some even more intriguing ideas as it's very possible that HBO will adapt #FireandBlood into the next spinoff series. Considering how popular Daenerys Targaryen has been through the series, and the rumors of Jon Snow's true lineage - a spinoff series around the Targaryen empire could be just what HBO is looking for to fill their coffers once Game of Thrones wraps up in the next couple years.
