Once Upon a Time (OUAT) is casting a different spell for its seventh season.

Over the past few weeks, show creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis crucial information regarding the latest installment of the ABC fairy tale drama. GEEKS gathered the 411 concerning this game-changing chapter of the franchise.

It’s not your parent’s “OUAT.”

At the end of the show’s sixth season, not one or two but six main cast members exited the show. The show’s loyal fan base, Oncers, saddened and shocked to learn that Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Jared S. Gilmore, Rebecca Mader, and Emile de Ravin exited the ABC fairy tale drama by their own choice or were let go due to story purposes. While Morrison, Gilmore, and de Ravin are expected to make their curtain calls as Emma Swan, young Henry Mills, and Belle, it is unknown when or if we will see Snow White, Prince Charming, and Zelena in the future.

Old faces, different roles

Lana Parrilla (Regina Mills/The Evil Queen), Robert Carlyle (Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin), and Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook) will be front and center this season. However, during the Season Seven promotional trailer that premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that these beloved characters would be in new roles. While Hook is expected to be a police officer, both Gold and Regina’s roles are undefined, but many fans expect them to be a crime boss and a bartender respectively.

Lots of new faces

Joining Parrilla, Carlyle, and O’Donoghue for this new chapter are actors Andrew J. West (Henry Mills), Alison Fernandez (Lucy), Dania Ramirez (Cinderella), and Gabrielle Anwar (Lady Tremaine). While West, Fernandez, Ramirez, and Anwar are part of the main cast, actresses Adelaide Kane (Drizella), Rose Reynolds (Alice of Alice in Wonderland), and Mekia Cox (Tiana of The Princess & the Frog) will be part of the show’s recurring cast.

An innovative story

Young Henry (Gilmore) exited Storybrooke to help out other characters and realms that needed to their own happy endings. On his travels, he grows up (West) and eventually, he crashes into Cinderella (Ramirez) in a new version of the Enchanted Forest. The two had fallen in love in and the classic princess gave birth to Lucy (Fernandez). The story flashes forward a few years later in Seattle’s Hyperion Heights, where a young Lucy knocked on her amnesiac father’s door with a clear message: “His family needs him.”

Hyperion Heights

OUAT’s new home for Season Seven is Hyperion Heights, a suburb of Seattle, Washington. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series creators revealed that Hyperion Heights’ residents are split between the people who are fairy tale characters missing their memories and regular people. While it will be interesting to see how the characters interact with people who do not know how to slay a dragon or if an apple is poisoned, the one character does not want our heroes to reclaim their memories and find their happy endings.

The Nefarious Lady Tremaine

Show creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Lady Tremaine (Anwar) would be the season’s major villain. While this character has no connection to the Cinderella and Lady Tremaine from previous seasons, the literary world’s infamous wicked stepmother is expected to claw into anyone in her way in both the Enchanted Forest and in Hyperion Heights. Tremaine’s role in Hyperion Heights is allegedly a power-hungry developer, who wants to gentrify the fictional city and is expected to have plans to separate the Mills family and other fairy tale characters from their loved ones.

The mystery curse caster

While Lady Tremaine is the new villain for the series, the creators and executive producers swore up-and-down to Entertainment Weekly that Tremaine did not create this evil spell. In the past, fans knew from the get-go that Regina activated the very first curse, but Oncers will not learn the identity of the person who unleashed the curse and why they did it until sometime later in Season Seven.

Once Upon a Time’s seventh season premieres on Friday, October 6 at 8 PM EST/7 PM CST on ABC.
