Nerdy Nessa Reviews: Movies

((This review may contain minor spoilers. While I try not to reveal more than the previews, I do not always succeed.))

It is no secret that I am a HUGE fan of the Rock, so when I saw it was time for his next movie, Rampage, to come out, I was ready to go.

Rampage is loosely based off of a video game and follows primatologist, Davis Okoye, (The Rock, Dwayne Johnson) and his bond with his albino gorilla, George. Or, well, that is how it starts. However, this bond is tested when George, along with a wolf and an alligator, (both of which don't have names) are infected with a rogue genetic pathogen causing the creatures to grow, mutate, and become angry. While the beasts make a devastating path across the country, Davis is trying to save his friend and the people in the path of the destruction. He does this with the help of geneticist Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) and government agent Harvey Russell (Jeffery Dean Morgan).

What I Liked

The Rock is known for his action movies, and Rampage is certainly full of action. It also has a strong element of comedy with a dash of drama. I loved the introduction to the character of Davis and how they explain his closeness to animals compared to humans. It creates an instant connection to the character. The character of George was also wonderful to meet in the beginning. He was both strong and funny, and it was believable that Davis and George had been together for a long time.

The action in the movie was on point as always when watching The Rock, and both exciting but not too far over the top. There was no point that the action scenes felt repetitive, giving you something exciting to watch throughout the whole movie.

Rampage’s antagonist was also very well executed. Claire and Brett Wyden (Malin Akerman and Jake Lacy) are the owners of Energyne, the developers of the pathogen which has infected the animals in the film. While Brett seems to be more of a follower, Claire shows no desire to back down. She handles the tough decisions like a true villainess, and it was enjoyable to watch her as her desire to save her project outweighed anything else.

What I Didn’t Like

Sometimes with action movies, especially action movies with the same leading actor, the movies can start to seem a little too similar. There are aspects of the character of Davis which seem similar to previous characters Johnson has played before. Sometimes it is difficult to tell if The Rock is getting comfortable with the characters he plays.

Also, the movie was a bit on the predictable side. Part of that was because the preview told the viewers quite a bit of what they were going to see, and some because, again, it is a bit similar to previous movies we have seen from The Rock. I would say it is because it follows a video game, but, while I haven’t personally played the game, I have been told by those who have that it is not very similar.

My Overall

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and would watch it again. While a little on the violent side, my daughter seemed to enjoy it as well. I would give it an overall score of 8.5/10.
