The Review

So, I was cruising through our well known online anime provider and found this anime among the others. It was relatively short, so I clicked on it out of a lack of any other anime I had sitting on the back shelf. And frankly, I'm glad I did.

I love this anime. It should change its name though, from My First Girlfriend is a Gal to How to Develop a Main Character. In fact, this fucking anime needs to be shown to other anime creators so that they too know how to fucking develop a main character. I'm serious about this. The main guy is a perverted virgin asshole who, in the beginning, only wants to get laid. However, slowly but surely, as the episodes go on, you start to see a change in him and he starts to ACTUALLY DEVELOP! Exciting, right!?

I've been through so many anime where none of the characters develop at all. They just stay the same stale ass character throughout the entire series, and you could literally time jump the hero from the first episode to the final and they'd be exactly the same. It's so irritating that people can get away with writing shit characters so frequently...

Anyway, our hero, the perverted Junichi Hashiba is tricked into begging the hottest girl (debatably) in their school to go out with him. First, she teases him a bit for perving on her. But then decides he's funny and adorable enough to give him a shot. And boy does she. Keep in mind, this review is probably going to be pretty short considering the series was short, and I don't want to spoil anything.

One of my favorite parts of the English dub is that they break the fourth wall so much that it's worthy of a Deadpool cameo. Whether it's mimicking Steve Irwin, mocking Trump's MAGA slogan, wearing a Kirito cosplay, or outright talking about what episode it is, it catches you off guard at all the right moments. Also, the biggest fourth wall breakers are Junichi's pals, the perv club supreme. They are just as cringy, if not more so than Junichi himself. One of them made me want to call the FBI on the author, however, I didn't. And you shouldn't either, as it's a fake character.

While I loved the dub, the valley girl accent that Yukana Yame, the main heroine, did get a bit thick at moments, making it rather annoying at times. But, I got used to it. It actually had a few odd moments where Junichi was daydreaming and Yukana lost her accent. Not sure what's up with that, but oh well. Any chance I get to be spared of that accent is worth it.

But I do have to say that some of the best parts of this anime (character growth aside) are the moments where the main characters put some misogynist dickwaffles in their place. Very few things are more satisfying, and honestly, you don't see enough anime doing this. Given that a lot of anime have some measure of characters that like to grope and feel up girls, or outright exploit them, you'd think that there'd be more. But I like the point that this was making about men who treat women like objects.

Honestly, that's all I really have to say. The comedy was on point with all the teasing of Junichi from the many girls who admired him, to the fourth wall breaking, to his asshole friends scheming about how to get laid, ect. And in a short anime like this, that's all I can really ask for.

TLDR;

This, like my previous review, was a day killer. But this time, in a good way. I really enjoyed the comedy, the characters, and especially the effort that the author put into making Junichi grow throughout the series. The music was present, but nothing special as far as I could tell, and the story was relatively simple. If you like decent harem anime, then this would be a pretty good add to the collection. Definitely worth watching.

Animation: 6/10

Story: 7/10

Comedy: 9/10

Overall Rating: 7/10

SPOILER TALK:

Best Girl: Ranko Honjō. She has short hair, dark skin, and kicks ass. Not to mention she loves boobs and has an adorable, if not stalker-like crush on Yukana.

Also, Shinpei was fucking killing me the entire series. As the biggest abuser of the fourth wall, his comedy was some of the best overall throughout the series.

Minoru, however, needs to burn in a fire. His only redeeming moment was at the end when he transformed into the gorilla beast from hell.
