'Riverdale' Just Released These Throwback Photos of the Gang in Their Classic Attire

Oh, sugar sugar! Riverdale has finally done it! After six episodes of watching the #Archie characters trying to fit into their 2010s modern-day clothes, #CW finally worked up the passion and inner nostalgia to dress and spruce them up in their classic Archie comics duds (obviously as fan service, but hey, not like anyone’s complaining).

In point of fact, this is actually what we’ve always wanted to see. From the moment the idea for the show was first announced, us #Archie fans have been craving like crazy to see our beloved characters the way we've always known and remembered them. And although we appreciate watching a more realistic and modern take on our favorite guys and gals, it still wouldn’t hurt to receive a little treat from the past every once in a while. Just like this one.

Everything — from Archie’s bowtie and vest to Betty and Veronica’s ‘50s coiffed dos and thigh-length skirts, to Jughead’s iconic S-adorned turtleneck and pointy gray crown — looks like it were pulled straight out of the comic books. If this doesn’t get your sugar rushing — either to your head or to your stomach like #Jughead Jones on hamburgers and milkshakes — I don’t know what else will.

The Archie Gang

The costume department and set designers of #Riverdale obviously spared no expense in recreating the characters’ looks (and backgrounds) for the throwback scene just as they were originally presented by the Archie Comic Publications in the early 1940s. Every little detail was meticulously taken into account, resulting in some of the most impressive comics-to-screen reenactments I've honestly seen in a very long time.

Golly, even the kitchen (and color palette) is exactly the same as I’ve always remembered!

Archie With Betty And Veronica

The infamously adorkable love triangle that has spanned four generations (and counting).

I've been reading the comics since I was around seven years old, switching between Team Betty and Team Veronica depending on the circumstances of whatever story I was presently reading. And now I'm watching and hooked on Riverdale, waiting for the same love triangle to eventually heat up. Some things just never get old.

(In the comics, Cheryl and her twin brother Jason originally hailed from Pembrooke, a neighboring upscale town just outside of Riverdale. The twins were always the original outsiders, not the Lodges.)

Arch And Jug, The Quintessential Best Friends

Long time best buds Archie and Jughead before the CW tore them apart.

Running at almost 78 years old (by publication history standards), Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones were the original comic book "it" BFFs (alternatively, partners-in-crime, since they often got in trouble together) aside from Betty and Veronica. However, where the girls often bickered, these two were always tight as a knitted glove; they rarely ever fought and often found solace hanging out with and asking for advice from each other.

Just like their TV counterparts on Riverdale, Archie and Jughead knew each other all the way from childhood; they lived in the same neighborhood, on the same block, and their families knew one another, so they grew up to become instant friends.

In the comics (unlike the #TV show) there was no problem the boys couldn't resolve between them, and whatever differences they had, they were able to work them out sooner or later, and keep things from affecting their friendship. In Riverdale, however, it's become a lot more complicated than that.

These photographic treats were taken as part of a dream sequence Jughead had in Episode 7 while spending the night in a broom closet in Riverdale High (his new home after the drive-in was plowed down by Fred Andrews’s construction company). And in spite of the cutesy, adorkable costumes and set pieces, this was actually meant to portray a rather macabre nightmare involving Jughead supposedly stabbing Archie on the back with a kitchen knife.

Way to put a creepy spin on a beloved classic, Riverdale, but I guess that’s just why we love you.

No More Skepticism?

Maybe in the beginning, some of us had our doubts about the castings. Maybe there were some who didn’t think the choices were particularly spot on, or perhaps others who thought the options just weren’t accurate enough or faithful enough to the spirit and look of the comics.

Well, after seeing these pictures, I have a feeling most of us naysayers were finally convinced. This right here is the Archie gang as they would most likely look like if they were real. This is them finally come to life.

I mean, come on. Just look at that. Look at those faces. The look is so spot-on, and so, so perfect, it’s kinda hard to believe they’re just acting. It doesn’t even look like cosplay; it just looks real. I can't imagine any other casting that would be every bit as flawless. Even Juggie's crown is every bit as iconic, amazing, and ridiculous as its comic book counterpart — just the way we want it.

It’s a shame they didn’t do one for Reggie Mantle though. The guy is as major a character as the other four; he deserves a spot in those photographs over Jason Blossom and Polly Cooper, of all people.

But maybe he will, soon enough. Hopefully, this might not be the only throwback sequence we'll see.

Renewed For A Second Season

To add to the hype and every Archie fan’s building excitement over recent episodes, it was announced several days ago that Riverdale has officially been renewed for another season. Hooray! Guess this calls for a milkshake and some hamburgers from whatever version we have of Pop Tate’s. Hopefully there will be more photos and set pieces like these in Season 2.
