Uh, guys, how long were we in space for? Oh dear, I don’t think we’re in the nineties anymore!

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling is a newly released Netflix movie. After floating in space for twenty years, Rocko, Heffer, and Filbert return to the twenty-first century O-Town. As Rocko is having trouble adjusting to all the overwhelming changes, he goes in search for Ralph Bighead to have him create a new episode of the Fatheads.

I was ecstatic when I heard that Netflix was returning with a brand new 45-minute special of one of my favorite shows as a kid. After twenty years, Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling did not miss a beat. It is a mind-opening, charismatic, and funny short movie. It’s also filled with many surprises.

Returning as the voices, Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko), Tom Kenny (Heffer), Mr. Lawrence (Filbert), Charlie Adler (Mr. Bighead and Bev Bighead) and countless talented voice actors returned. Every character (and I mean every character) appears in the special, whether they have a line or a silent cameo. Everyone gets a fair share of screen-time.

However, I wish we could have seen more of Dr. Hutchinson and Heffer’s family. While the specials focus is Rocko’s story, I would have loved to have seen Heffer’s reunion with his family. I loved episodes of Heffer and his family!

The animation is superb! The special was storyboarded, keeping up with the style of the show. Animation has come a long way, inventing new ways for movements and character designs.

The special does not miss a beat with the jokes and humor. Rocko’s Modern Life was known for its adult jokes. The special is filled with humorous jokes and callbacks from start to finish. I felt as if I traveled back to my childhood for forty-five minutes!

Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling took a bold step. Ralph Bighead or I should say Rachel Bighead, went on a soul searching journey. The positive message about being transgender is incredible and it played out so naturally. All the characters, even Ed Bighead, are accepting of Rachel’s change!

I applaud Nickelodeon Animation Studios for a job well done. We live our lives how we want. Go on a soul searching journey. They’re rejuvenating and we can learn so much about ourselves. Rachel is a positive role model to all those struggling. We can find happiness.

While some reboots are obvious cash grabs, Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling is nothing like that. The special is here to give fans the episode they have been waiting for and addresses social commentary many people, young or old, are facing today. Change is for the better. It’s scary but we can’t live in the past, dwelling over issues. We have to move on to create our own lives and keep creating.

Our world changes constantly. Rocko does make a point that the twenty-first century is dangerous. With the ever-changing technology and social media, people have been growing attached to screens hardly taking part in physical interaction letting technology slowly consume the world.

Director Joe Murray created the sequel that appealed to fans and even gives closure. We have to prepare ourselves for the changes and negative outcomes. Don’t waste precious hours. You’re living your life every second. Make your journey worthwhile.

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling finds the heart in its story and characters. It’s a meaningful story packed in with jokes. There was never a dull moment. The special is a great follow up to a memorable series. It’s a fantastic satisfying conclusion that I suggest you get on Netflix now to bask in the nostalgia.
