Next week, Saban’s Power Rangers will premiere silver screens worldwide.

To get ready for the film, Geeks is providing it readers with a quick cheat sheet on some of the crucial elements in the Power Rangers universe that will show up in the reboot.

What are the Power Rangers?

The Power Rangers are a group of teenagers with attitude who are hand-picked by the intergalactic wizard known as Zordon. By accessing the Morphing Grid, Jason, Zack, Trini, Billy, and Kimberly are transformed into multicolored warriors who are charged to protect the planet from the forces of evil. Actors Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin, Becky G, RJ Cyler, and Naomi Scott will portray the techno-colored teenagers in the film.

Where have I seen these Power Rangers before?

Power Rangers co-creators Haim Saban and Shuki Levy saw a popular Japanese television series called Super Sentai and decided to create a westernized version for children’s television that incorporated footage from their Japanese counterparts. The very first incarnation of the Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, debuted on FOX KIDS on August 28, 1993. After three successful seasons as Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers spun off into 20 different seasons that aired on ABC Kids, ABC Family, and Nickelodeon. Plus, the Power Rangers appeared in two feature films: 1995’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie and 1997’s Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.

Who are Zordon & Alpha Five?

Zordon is an intergalactic wizard who created the rangers' powers, weapons, and zords. He was engaged in a lengthy war with villainess Rita Repulsa. During the final phase of their war, Rita tricked Zordon into a cease fire, where she trapped him in a time warp. Zordon and his robot assistant, Alpha 5, traveled throughout time and space and landed on Earth, where they set up their headquarters as a safeguard against the forces of evil. Initially, Zordon guided five generations of Power Rangers before his untimely passing at the end of Power Rangers in Space’s finale. Emmy-winning actor and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers alum Bryan Cranston will portray Zordon, while Bill Hader will voice Alpha 5 in the reboot.

Who is Rita Repulsa?

Rita Repulsa was the very first villain that the Power Rangers ever faced. The intergalactic sorceress who specializes in black magic caught the attention of Zordon when she conquered planets for her master and future husband, Lord Zedd. After tricking Zordon, the witch was trapped in a dumpster by her nemesis until astronauts accidently released Rita and her warriors. For six seasons, Rita remained a recurring foe against four generations of Rangers until Zordon purified her with goodness at the end of Power Rangers in Space. Actress Elizabeth Banks will portray a more ruthless version of the character who is after the Zeo Crystal.

What is the Zeo Crystal?

The Zeo Crystal was introduced at the third season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. The crystal was one of the most powerful objects in the Power Rangers Universe. In fact, when Rita and Zedd destroyed the power coins in the Mighty Morphin’ Alien Rangers mini-series, the Power Rangers used the crystal as their new energy source in the fourth season: Power Rangers Zeo. The Zeo Crystal is expected to be integral to the story’s plot! In fact, Rita wants the crystal so badly that she revives a monstrous golden warrior, Goldar, to help her get the crystal!

What are zords?

Zords are giant robots created by Zordon that the Power Rangers use to fight Rita’s enlarged warriors. The very first zords that the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers used were the Dino Zords. These robots were modeled after legendary dinosaurs including the Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, sabretooth tiger, mastodon, and pterodactyl. By the way, these zords combine into one giant robot that is known as a megazord!

Will the Rangers defeat Rita? Find out next week!
