Raimi: Directors don't like to talk about their bad films.Nerdist: I don't think that 'bad' is the right word.Raimi: Awful.

Poor Spidey, even Filmmaker Sam Raimi feels he messed up Spider-Man 3. Well, the feeling is mutual.

Sam Raimi who created the coolest, cultest and most awesome horror series of all time, has great regret for messing up Spider-Man 3. This week, he appeared on the popular Nerdist podcast to speak about the new movie under his production, Murder of a Cat. As the nerdy conversation continued from his low budget Evil Dead to collaborating on other projects, it transitioned into Spider-Man and he just let it go.

A retrospective Mr. Sam Raimi said “…I messed up plenty with the third Spider-Man.”

Raimi revealed his shortcomings, saying he should have focused more on the relationships between the characters because during the making, he “didn’t really believe in all the characters.”

He made a really good point when he clearly outlined what went wrong when he had to move forward with the successful Spider-Man 2 -

"I think [raising the stakes] was the thinking going into it, and I think that's what doomed us. I should've just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar. I think that was my mistake."

Yes, adding more villains does not maketh a movie awesome. Even Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a lot of characters literally and figuratively.

And then, he went on to say..

"Working in that big budget arena, with so much at stake, with much beloved characters that Stan Lee created, people really hold them so dear to them that you don't want to mess up and I messed up with that third Spider-Man. People hated me for years. They still hate me for it.
"... It's a movie that just didn't work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn't really believe in all the characters, and so that can't be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn't love something, it's wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it."

Raimi made an engaging conversation and spoke about the challenges when he helmed the mantle saying “each and every one of those Spider-Man films was pretty damn challenging.”

Whatever the case is, Spider-man has always suffered from studio interference from Sony. That's pressure and difference in opinion.

The whole podcast is available online and do listen to it. Murder of a Cat directed by his wife Gillian Greene is out on VOD now.

Here’s the trailer for the movie

Personal Note: I know it’s about SpiderMan, but Sam Raimi gave us Ash Williams. That’s iconic and as of now, he's working on the film adaption of The Last of Us and bringing forward the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series.Maybe we should just let it go and look forward to Sinister Six, Venom, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and the possible female Spidey spin-off that people keep talking.
