I hope you've wrapped up warm and your life insurance is all paid up to date, we are off back into the bloodbath that is #FX's Fargo for another round. The crime anthology series returns for a third outing, picking up in the year 2010 where a series of small Minnesota towns are rocked by yet more grisly murders and mob rule. With a cast that includes Ewan McGregor (twice), Harry Potter's David Thewlis, and Gone Girl's Carrie Coon, it is set to be the most prestigious season yet. Check out the Fargo season 3 characters below.

While we are still left out in the cold on most of the details for the snowy saga, we finally have a teaser trailer for the season which gives us an (almost) unrecognizable look at McGregor alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon. Set in a grim diner alongside an ominous neon sign saying "DIE", we see McGregor as a balding Ray Stussy, acting shifty and leaving very quickly after Coon's Chief Gloria Burgle sits down - presumably for a slice of pie!

As well as the portly Ray, McGregor will also play the slightly more svelte Emmit Stussy, the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, who has his world rocked by a criminal organization. He will be joined by his right-hand man, his jealous brother, and a newly paroled femme fatale. So, if you are ready, let's look at who's who with this Fargo Season 3 characters list.

Emmit Stussy

Portrayed by: Ewan McGregor

McGregor heads up not one, but two, main roles in the third season. As previously mentioned, Emmit Stussy is known as the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, and by the sounds of it, a bit of a local celebrity. As a real estate mogul and family man, this being #Fargo means that it surely won't last for long. Given the show's track record, we can probably expect some sort of murder, kidnap, or extra-marital affair. How long until Emmit's world comes tumbling down around him?

Ray Stussy

Portrayed by: Ewan McGregor

The second half of the (non-twin) brothers, Ray is the opposite of his brother. While Emmit is the successful entrepreneur, Ray finds himself stuck as a "chip on the shoulder" parole officer, who blames his troubles on Emmit. Peaking in high school, Ray is now the balding and slightly pudgy younger brother living in Emmit's shadow. The two will surely butt heads, or could we see a Parent Trap role reversal where Ray tries to imitate his brother?

Gloria Burgle

Portrayed by: Carrie Coon

Carrie Coon takes on the leading lady role this time, picking up as a female police officer as Allison Tolman did in Season 1. Gloria Burgle is the newly-divorced chief of the Eden Valley police who is struggling to understand why those around her connect with their phones instead of each other.

Given that Burgle's character description has an emphasis on the "newly divorced" aspect, we can surely expect her to find a love interest over the course of the series. Her no-nonsense approach to keeping a level head while others fall apart will surely come in handy among the usual Fargo chaos.

Nikki Swango

Portrayed by: Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Ditching her Scream Queen title, Winstead plays the crafty parolee Nikki Swango. There must be more than a slight coincidence that Ray Stussy's job is as a parole officer, so the pair will obviously cross paths, presumably with disastrous results. Swango reportedly has a passion for competitive Bridge playing, which will somehow weave itself into the plot, perhaps to help Ray take down his brother. The teaser shows that she clearly wears the trousers in whatever twisted relationship they have but with Ray being the balding, plumper, version of Emmit, maybe her alliances will soon change.

V.M. Vargas

Portrayed by: David Thewlis

With possibly the coolest character name on the list, David Thewlis will be causing trouble as V.M. Vargas, the stereotypical crime boss of the series. Maybe he could have something to do with that crime syndicate everyone is going on about? Vargas delivers the news that Emmit's reign as the parking Lot King could be in jeopardy when he partners up with Vargas's employers. The new partners aren't quite as above the law as Stussy is used to being, while Vargas is described as a "mysterious loner." Sounds a lot like a dangerous Lorne Malvo to me!

Sy Feltz

'Boardwalk Empire' [Credit: HBO]

Portrayed by: Michael Stuhlbarg

Described as Emmit's right-hand man, Feltz will undoubtedly be just as put out by the changes to management as his boss is. Let's hope that he can put his negotiation skills into practice to avoid more bloodshed than usual, but it is doubtful. At least Stuhlbarg can relive his gangster days as Arnold Rothstein in Boardwalk Empire.

Donny Mashman

'The Jim Gaffigan Show' [Credit: Sony Pictures Television]

Portrayed by: Jim Gaffigan

What would Fargo be without a bumbling police force to get caught in all the body piles and wood chippers? Jim Gaffigan will be fulfilling the slightly rotund role of Donny, Gloria's deputy. While Gloria is apparently not very tech-savvy, can Masman do any better, or will it all be donuts and coffee?

Howard Zimmerman

'A Serious Man' [Credit: Focus Features]

Portrayed by: Fred Melamed

Zimmerman is reportedly a mover and a shaker who can spin a profit, so here's betting that Fred Melamed's stint in Season 3 will be as an accountant for the corrupt businessmen we are sure to meet. Who knows, he could be on the side of the law, but given Melamed's portrayal of Sy Ableman in A Serious Man, we doubt it will all be sunshine and smiles.

Moe Dammick

'Boardwalk Empire' [Credit: HBO]

Portrayed by: Shea Whigham

Alongside the inept cops, we always need some unbelieving outside force who comes in to try and take over the show. Seemingly made for the "cop role," Whigham heads up as the Meeker County Chief of Police. Given the way in which Chief Vern Thurman bowed out so early on in the first season, I'm guessing that Dammick will be getting an early send off.

Maurice LeFay

'Batman v Superman' [Warner Bros.]

Portrayed by: Scoot McNairy

The intense acting of Scoot McNairy will come in handy when he plays a paranoid stoner with a criminal past. He has to either tie to Ray Stussy or to Vargas's criminal enterprises. It is a smaller role than the rest, so we see LeFay being more of a henchman a'la Adam Goldberg in Season 1 than a full blown bad guy.

Portrayed by: Karan Soni

Quite why the town would need a scientist is beyond me, but with this series reportedly obsessed with "selfie culture," could the police borrow the skills of someone more academically oriented that the town's usual population? The inclusion of Dr. Gilruth is made even more interesting by the description of the final character, suggesting something even weirder could be at work.

Thaddeus Mobley

'Project X' [Credit: Warner Bros.]

Portrayed by: Thomas Mann

If you thought having a scientist toddling around in the snow was a weird visitor to town, how about a science fiction novelist? Perhaps Thaddeus Mobley is writing a book on the town, or has come through due to writer's block. Either way, it seems like an odd place to set an alien invasion. Thomas Mann will presumably be joining forces with the other youngest member of the cast, Karan Soni, to do some digging in Season 3. Cue hilarious anecdotes about how the two inept youngsters get embroiled in the madness and murder.

We are sure that more details will come out ahead of the show's spring release date. In the meantime, better get preparing those caskets, we can assure you that not everyone will be making it out of the season alive. I just hope that wood chipper is still in working order!
