Sentinels in X-Men Series 'Gifted' Could Link to 'Days of Future Past'

The Sentinels could be a key indicator of the 'Days of Future Past' comics influencing the new X-Men drama 'Gifted.'

If you haven't already heard, #Gifted, the latest X-Men series developed by Fox and Marvel is picking up quite a bit of steam in online communities. While not much information has been revealed, the series appears to be reminiscent of Days Of Future Past (DOFP) with a major component of the DOFP story being revealed in the casting call for Gifted.

Apparently, the casting call asked for a few particular roles. Among those roles, we see a listing for "sentinel service techs" indicating the mutant-killing robots known as Sentinels will appear in Gifted. Otherwise, why have technicians for Sentinels that don't exist? Check out the casting call below:

High school students at dance, Seedy types at bar, Native Americans at outpost, 4AM diner patrons, Hotel maid, Law office background, Barfly woman, 14–17 year old high school students, and sentinel service techs.

The presence of Sentinels probably means that the government is using these robots to capture mutants. If that's true, then the Sentinels are a key indicator of the DOFP comics influencing the new X-Men drama Gifted.

We should also account for the Mutant Resistance, lead by Thunderbird (Blair Redford) in the new X-Men series being another indicator of DOFP having some influence on the series, since the Mutant Resistance was another key component of the DOFP comics.

With it seeming all the more likely that Gifted will be influenced by DOFP comics, we could see a few memorable moments from the comics depicted on-screen as well. Among the potential scenes that could play out, here are a few pivotal moments from the Days Of Future Past story that could believably take place on Gifted.

Classic X-Men Killed by Sentinels

As one of the first mass killings, the Sentinels targeted and killed a majority of the #XMen. Only a few members of the X-Men survived, while Storm, Colossus, Sprite and Magneto were all captured. Among the casualties were Nightcrawler, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Banshee.

The surviving members of the X-Men later joined the Mutant Resistance, so we may see some iteration of them on Gifted. The Mutant Resistance probably won't feature any notable X-Men, but we may see some of the second string/lesser-known mutants captured by Sentinels in the DOFP story.

Mutant Internment Camps

Another integral component of the DOFP story was the internment of mutants. After the majority of mutants were killed off, the remaining mutants were gathered up and placed into internment camps. Some of the mutants who were captured freed themselves or were freed by other mutants. While that aspect of the comics might seem irrelevant, since Gifted will also depict mutants on the run from the government, it could also show mutants being placed into internment camps.

Sentinels Destroy Society

After the mutant population was decimated, the Sentinels then turned their attention to the rest of society. Somehow, their programming became corrupted and resulted in the Sentinels targeting all living life-forms for extinction. With that directive in place, civilization came to a screeching halt, leaving the Sentinels to reign supreme. The same could believably take place on Gifted, and knowing that the government is hunting down mutants, Gifted will likely begin with the Sentinels.

Are the Sentinels evidence of 'Days of Future Past' influencing the 'Gifted' series?

With some details of Gifted being known, the addition of the Sentinels is a defining piece of evidence suggesting that the plot is related to Days Of Future Past, if not a retelling of the iconic story from #MarvelComics. Whatever the case, it'll be interesting to see how the Sentinels play into the new X-Men series as they've always been bad news for mutants in the comics. It's fair to assume they'll be just as bad for the mutants on Gifted.

Check out the series description below:

Kate and Reed Stewart, two human parents who discover that their children are mutants are forced to go on the run from an anti-mutant government. Eventually they meet up with an underground mutant resistance movement led by the mutant, Thunderbird who goes by the alias "Sam."
