Shazam-Mania is about to hit the world!

Levi/Batson

Though Shazam is not one of the most well known heroes in the world, he’s now making quite a name for himself! San Diego Comic-Con gave us our first look at Zachary Levi and Asher Angel’s version of Billy Batson’s kid turned superhero. So, without further ado, let’s pick it apart...

He’s trouble, that Billy.

Angel as Mormal Billy Batson

It appears not only is Billy Batson a bit of a loner, he’s also a bit of a trouble maker. The above picture shows Batson attempting to steal a car! We also see him in what appears to be a principal’s office.

Looks like our hero will be a bit of a rebel, something that might help him in his crime fighting.

Nods to the Wider DC Universe

It’s a Batarang thang.

Whilst in Freddy Freeman’s house (his best friend in the film played by young actor Jack Dylan Grazer), we see one of Batman’s Batarangs. Not only that, the trailer shows Superman newspaper clippings and some kind of object that is labelled as authentic.

The Signs/Crutch of a True Hero

Go get ‘em, Billy!

The trailer shows a pretty cool moment: Billy sticking up for his friend by beating down bullies with a crutch.

Now, let’s not condone brutally beating kids with hard objects! But maybe the film will show Billy to monitor power and strength against enemies where necessary. It also shows that early on, even before acquiring powers, Billy has the heart of a hero. A good trait for a kid, right?

What’s with the symbols?

Billy begins his transformation.

Whilst on the train after attacking those darn bullies, Billy is greeted by the sound of a stranger. As the train begins to go haywire, the signs on the train turn into the symbols I show you above.

What do they mean? Potentially they are just the unknown person’s ancient language, or maybe they’re something that twist into the plot?

'Okay!... Shazam?'

A Hero’s Birth

Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard, also named Shazam, in a cool scene, bestows his powers upon young Billy. Why? I’m sure we will be given a reason. If it was the whole bully situation, you’re really going to be letting some brave kids down, guys!

Our First True Look at Zachary Levi’s Adult Billy Batson/Shazam

Awe-Some

Need I say more? He looks incredible. I’m digging it already. Levi’s suit may look a bit foamy and fake but y’all have seen the gym pic. The guy is huge. He’s ripped. He’s Shazam.

'Don’t scream.'

Now the hilarity kicks in.

Turning up at Freddy’s home, showing a “don’t scream” sign in the window, it’s time for Billy to do some convincing.

We know the film is hugely inspired by Tom Hank’s Big, so we’re in for a treat from here on out, I’m sure. Why? It’s obviously going to reminisce back to Tom Hank’s character having to convince his best friend he is himself in a future award winning actor's body! Now all we need is the Zoltar machine...

'Dude, I don’t even know how to pee in this thing!'

We’d all do the same.

They’re kids, and they’re aspiring video journalists, so this fits perfectly!

With the help of Freddy, and eqipped with some flossing dance techniques, Billy tests his stretch by putting his fist through a wall. Here, Levi really seems to capture the excitement of a kid discovering he has super strength. Exciting stuff, if you ask me!

Meet Dr. Thaddeus Sivana

“You’re like a bad guy, right?”

So this is our one and only glimpse of Mark Strong’s big bad for the movie. Though it’s not much, it’s enough to see that it’s the first and only time Batson seems to be out of his depth. Sounds like this guy is going to give Shazam a bit of trouble.

Sivana is an extremely intelligent and equally selfish man. Now, with newfound telekinetic abilities, it seems he’ll prove to do some damage to the boy inside the man.
