Sounds of the sound barrier breaking wakes Chuck Hedgehog in the early morning. "Great," he thinks, "he's doing it again." He quickly gets ready to head out and grab his speedy, fifteen year old nephew, from trouble.

Wind and leaves brush past Sonic the Hedgehog's face as he takes a morning run. He loves it out here in the green grasslands outside of the jungle. He gets to run free! Go wherever he wants for however long he wants. Feeling the ground keeping him up, pushing him forward, the wind blowing harshly against his face. He's free.

That is until he hears his Uncle Chuck calling to him from the edges of Knothole. Knowing he will face a lecture, he stops to take in the view and a deep breath, and speeds back over towards his home.

An alert goes off on Robotnik's radar as he hovers over South Island. Confused that there is any sign of life on an island that's been uninhabited for years, he sends down three recon robots to go down and come back up with intel.

Sonic makes an abrupt stop in front of his uncle, giving him a smirk that only says, "it's all fine, nothing to worry about." They begin to walk back into Knothole.

"Sonic I—" Chuck begins before being interrupted by his quick footed and witted nephew.

"Look, I know what you're going to say. 'Sonic, no more going outside of the perimeter, you know the rules'. But let's face it, Chuck, there's no reason for these rules to be in place anyways!" Sonic casually speaks as the two hedgehogs enter their home. "Have you seen it out there, Chuck? It's beautiful! There's nothing to fear out there trust me Chuck, you just gotta—"

Chuck begins to get aggravated. Not with Sonic's persistency, although that's adding to it a little, but with himself. He should have told all the adults to be honest with the children about their parents. Now, these kids are going to grow up with hundreds of questions about where they come from and what their place is in the world and it's his fault. "That's enough, Sonic," Chuck begins to divert the subject, "Rules are in place for a reason and that reason is—"

Suddenly, screams are heard from outside. Joined by the doors of houses being slammed shut. Sonic, being the extrovert he is, rushes to see what all the commotion is about. Chuck follows a few seconds behind to see Sonic looking at what looks like three Robotnik robots marching towards Knothole. Seeing his nephew stand in front of the impending danger reminds him of looking at Jules fighting off against the opposing Robotnik army fifteen years ago. Trying to get Sonic to back off of the situation Chuck exclaims, "This is why we have rules, kid! Come in!" But he knows it'll never work. Kid's too headstrong for his own good. He just needs to pray for the best right now.

"Who are these chumps trying to walk into my neighborhood?!" Sonic asks to whoever would be listening. But it's this that gets people to start opening their windows to see the commotion.

As the robots enter Knothole... a small, two-tailed, orphan fox exits his tree house and plops onto the ground to see what's going on. Having a love for building things and striving one day to be a mechanic, these robots encapsulate his thought and he doesn't even realize that they've just entered the town! He looks to the tall blue hedgehog standing in front of them, not moving an inch, not even scared. "Mobian life forms detected, robotization plans initiated," the robots blare out of their speakers as they fire a tranquilization ray at Sonic.

"Heh, guess you gotta be faster than that you dumb lugs!" Sonic chuckles as he tauntingly yawns. But instead of firing at him again, like he thought they would, they fire at a small fox that he didn't know was behind him! Sonic dashes to the young fox and safely gets him out of the way instructing him to, "go head on home to your family okay little guy? I'll take these hunks of junk from here!" Sonic smirks and speeds towards the robots.

But little did Sonic know, this young fox had no family. He doesn't even remember how he got here. All he remembers is building this treehouse for himself when he saw that everyone else had a house too, just so he wouldn't feel left out. Yet people still made fun of him. They'd never seen a fox with two tails before. Pushed him to a breaking point of fear, causing him to stay in his treehouse until he truly needed to go out for food and water.

Sonic speeds up to the robot closest to him and tries something he's been practicing in the field for a couple weeks now, he calls it a spindash. He figures if he gets to his max speed and curls into a ball formation, it'll fend off anyone who may break into his home or threaten him in the grassland. He bursts through the robot with ease, hopping up a little bit so his spindash would strike in the middle of the robot where the main wiring is located. When he stops and turns to the second robot, he sees the crowd of people who have gathered outside of their homes. Smiling at his bravery.

Seeing the crowd basically fires a shot of adrenaline into Sonic, giving him confidence to quip, "You last two metal losers can surrender if you don't want a beat down like that one!" But the robots persist and turn their weapons to the blue hero, causing him to smirk and sprint towards them.

Outside of the crowd, a few mobians gather up. Sally Acorn, Mighty Armadillo, Amy Rose the Hedgehog, and Ray the Flying Squirrel. All members of a secret group in Knothole called the Freedom Fighters. Formed to keep the peace if the peace were to ever be disrupted. This will be their first time on duty. But it looks like someone beat them to it, but everyone needs help sometimes right?

Sonic flips in his spindash motion and lands on the robot, breaking it apart. The crowd cheers for him. Sonic, getting caught up in the praise, looks at everyone and smiles, causing him to get grabbed by the last robot. "Finally looks like one of you will pose a challenge!" Sonic says as he tries to divert his pain. These robots do not have rounded fingers, no, they have pencil fingers. They hurt.

Just as Sonic thinks he may not be able to get out of his grasp, a female voice erupts from the crowd, "Freedom Fighters, assemble!" The Freedom Fighters jump out of the crowd, Sally in the lead, charging the robot. The robot diverts his attention and throws Sonic to the side in order to try and blast the Freedom Fighters.

Mighty gets to it first, punching it with his mean right hook. He hops to the side to give way for Amy and her giant piko piko hammer. She hits it on the left side of its torso, flinging it over to Ray who, gives it an adorably weak hit. Sally slides in with two light swords attached to her bracelets. She slices it's wiring and Sonic leaps in with a spindash to finish it off.

The crowd cheers. Sonic stands up and looks at the crowd. He turns to the Freedom Fighters and gives them a thumbs up, "this was fun, let's do it again sometime," he chuckles. He begins to start jogging away but is stopped by Sally.

"Wait a minute, who are you?" She asks.

Sonic simply turns and gives them all a smirk, "The name's Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog! Catch ya on the flip side!" He speeds off to God knows where. The Freedom Fighters are astounded. This guy's good, very good. The perfect candidate for a Freedom Fighter. He jumped into action before even thinking. Not to mention, he's fast, very fast.

Mighty turns to Sally, "You know, Sal, we could use someone like him on our side," but she doesn't say anything in fear of this new hedgehog taking her leading spot.

Within the next week, Sonic became the town celebrity. Without being able to walk through town square without getting looks from girls and people screaming his name. But there was one day in particular that Sonic saw something he didn't like. The two tailed fox he saved a few days earlier, being picked on by a couple other kids.

As Tails stands before the two bullies, not knowing what to do. They stop when a shadow showers above them. They turn around to see Sonic. A grin grows on Tails' face.

"You know, you should pick on someone your own size," his voice echoes through the bullies' heads as they nod and run away. Sonic kneels to Tails' height and puts his hand on his shoulder, "Sorry they were being mean to ya. Forget them, lemme walk you home."

Tails, in awe that Sonic the Hedgehog is actually talking to him, brings him to his treehouse. Sonic checks the place out and smirks, "Nice place? Where'd your parents get the idea for a treehouse instead of a normal land house?"

"I built this house," Tails says to Sonic, causing Sonic's mouth to drop.

"You mean with the help of your parents right?" Sonic asks, still in awe such a small kid did something so big.

Tails shakes his head, "I don't have any parents." A wave of heartache hits Sonic's heart. Where is his parents? He's what, eight? He knows what it feels like to not know where your parents are. But at least he has Uncle Chuck to raise him, this kid has no one. Not only that, but he's got a lot of skill. This kid built all of this then. He's got some talent.

Trying to regain his composure Sonic asks, "What's your name, kid?"

Tails turns to Sonic with wide eyes. He wants to know his name? No one's ever asked him that before. No one's ever cared to ask. Warmth fills Tails as he tells him, "Miles. But, I prefer Tails."

Sonic nods, "Tails... I dig it! How about this Tails, why don't you come live with me and my Uncle Chuck? I mean this place is great, but it sounds like you could use some company. We can use this treehouse as a hangout spot!"

Tails is in complete shock. A home? The treehouse is nice, but it's no home. A brother and Uncle to live with? How could he pass it up?

Although hesitant, Uncle Chuck welcomes Tails with open arms.

A few days later, as Sonic and Tails are hanging out in the treehouse they hear a knock on the tree from down below. Sonic and Tails poke their head out to see the group of people that helped Sonic when the robots attack. The Freedom Fighters.

"Sonic the Hedgehog? We'd like a word," Sally yells to the treehouse above.

"Who's asking?" He questions.

"The Freedom Fighters. We'd like to offer you a spot on our team," Mighty yells.
