With the trailer debut for Spider-Man: Homecoming finally here, our first glimpse at #Spiderman's world proves that his world resides well within the Marvel Cinematic Universe — evidenced by Tony Stark's substantial part in the trailer. Along with the sassy playboy making an appearance, he'll also be suiting up in the movie, seeing as Iron Man can be seen flying into action alongside Spidey within the last few moments of the trailer.

The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, is set to be the main villain of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and will be joined by fellow supervillain Shocker, played by Bokeem Woodbine. So not only is Iron Man suiting up to help Spider-Man, but we could potentially see Shellhead come face to face with the Vulture on the big screen.

It seems likely that this fledgling Spider-Man will need help to combat both #Vulture and #Shocker, so it's reasonable to assume that the more experienced #Ironman would jump in to save his young charge from almost certain death. However, Tony Stark could have other, more covert plans in place to keep Spider-Man out of harm's way.

Will Iron Man Take On The Vulture By Himself?

In the trailer, we hear Tony Stark give Peter Parker sage advice on what to do about the Vulture:

"Forget the flying monster guy. There are people who handle this sort of thing."

That quote from Stark may seem insignificant, but if we account for the billionaire mentioning someone more capable than Spider-Man handling the Vulture situation, Stark might already know of another such superhero. However, Stark is known for his narcissism, so he could be referring to himself when letting Peter Parker know that "someone" more capable is dealing with the Vulture.

Even if Tony Stark suits up as Iron Man to fight the Vulture, it's unlikely he'll be the victor in that battle. Otherwise Spider-Man: Homecoming would just be another Iron Man film. For this reason, it's more plausible to assume Tony Stark will need Spider-Man suited up alongside him to defeat both Vulture and Shocker, and be the hero of the day.

Aside from the likelihood of Tony Stark involving himself in the Vulture fight, could Stark have been referring to someone other than himself when accounting for his reference of people "more capable of handling the Vulture"? If so, who would be dispatched to deal with the new MCU menance?

Could Vision Make An Appearance?

Out of all the possible heroes who are available to help Spider-Man, the candidates are very limited. As of now, within the MCU most of the Avengers have been branded fugitives, meaning they'd be unable to appear in public to assist Spider-Man. So the only remaining Avenger who could plausibly show up alongside Iron Man is Vision.

#Vision was on Team Iron Man during Captain America: Civil War and wound up being the only Avenger who hadn't escaped, been exiled, injured or captured (aside from Iron Man) at the film's conclusion. And in Age of Ultron, everyone else on Team Iron Man went back to their respective lives, but Vision didn't have a life before so he had nothing to go back to. Which is why he's likely hanging around at the old Avengers HQ, waiting for the next superhuman threat to roll in.

But we do have to consider how getting Vision involved would be too easy a solution for the Vulture problem. So in terms of keeping the film suspenseful, it's likely that Earth-level heroes like Iron Man and Spider-Man will be the only superheroes taking on the Vulture and Shocker.

Although, there is the possibility that another forgotten Avenger could have a role to play in Spider-Man: Homecoming — and that Avenger is James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine.

Will James Rhodes Return To Action?

Rhodes was last seen in Captain America: Civil War. After sustaining critical injuries during the fight with Team Cap, he was left with partial paralysis. But by the end of the film, we see Rhodes recuperating and learning to get back on his feet, with the help of Stark. The scene of Rhodes going through physical rehabilitation in Civil War takes place at the old Avengers HQ, so considering that facility is one of the locations featured in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Rhodes could make an appearance during at least one scene of the new film.

We'll likely see him advise Tony Stark on what course of action he should take in response to the Vulture and Shocker issue in New York. However, there's a slight possibility we'll see Rhodes take on a more active role and find a way to get back into combat, thanks to Stark's exoskeletal leg braces.

If you recall Iron Man 3, Stark remotely controlled his prototype suit the Mark 43, and was able to use all the suit's functions without wearing it. So with this technology in place, it's quite possible that Rhodes will command a War Machine suit with the help of a similar console, enabling him to be in the fight, without actually being in the fight.

Could S.H.I.E.L.D. Get Involved?

We also have to consider how Stark's words about "people handling this sort of thing" could be a reference to S.H.I.E.L.D. The organization was recently re-legitimized on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., with Daisy "Quake" Johnson now at the ready to handle superhuman threats like that of Vulture.

However, it doesn't seem likely that any member of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be directly involved with Spider-Man: Homecoming, since Marvel TV's executive vice president Jeph Loeb said that the possibility of a major crossover between Marvel TV and the MCU would prove problematic, admitting to SlashFilm:

“Part of the challenge of doing this sort of thing is that the movies are planned out years in advance of what it is that we are doing. Television moves at an incredible speed.”

But even when we account for the likes of Loeb admitting that a crossover would be tricky, it would still be plausible for S.H.I.E.L.D. to initially respond to a threat like that of Vulture. Of course, it's unlikely that the central heroes, like Daisy Johnson or Agent Phil Coulson, would be involved, but us Marvel fans can live in hope. Right?
