Stage 284 presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! Performances will be held at The Community House in South Hamilton, Massachusetts from December 14th-22nd, 2018. What better way to enjoy the holiday season attending a show filled with laughter and a heartfelt message!
Originally a book written by Barbara Robinson in 1971, the story evolved from a film into a stage adaptation. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! revolves around a town putting on its annual Christmas pageant. When the director of the Christmas pageant slips on the ice, injuring herself, everything is left up to Grace Bradley. That’s not the worst of it. A band of misfit children nicknamed "The Horrible Herdmans" ask to be in the show. These kids steal others lunches, flatten car tires, and much, much worse! Does their mischief somehow cause this year's Christmas pageant to become the worst?
Stage 284 has put on countless productions for a decade now. From mainstage, youth productions, and even after school theatre workshops, Stage 284 thrives to bring everyone's talents to the stage.
Directed by Jimmy Turner, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! has had a special place in his heart ever since he first read the story when he was eight years old. “My favorite aspect of directing BCPE is truly the story itself,” Turner explains. “As a director, you have to be able to see all the various threads between your performers, props, set and lighting elements.” Although a stressful challenge, Turner has enjoyed the process thinking up new and different ideas with cast and crew.
Christmas Pageant is filled with many dance numbers. Kathleen Tringale who has worked on countless productions with her Stage 284 family immediately jumped at the opportunity to help choreograph. “The choreography for Christmas Pageant is interesting,” Tringale explains. “The music is very much 50s and 60s inspired.” Being a fan of 50s and 60s music, Tringale had a good handle on the type of dance movements.
Cast members have also been working feverishly to bring their characters and songs to life. Speaking of which, Christmas Pageant is filled with a multitude of energetic songs. To name a few there is "We’re Countin’ on You," "Die, Herod, Die!" and the most popular "The Horrible Herdmans" to start the show.
While Kathleen Castellanos is the music director for Christmas Pageant, Cecile Tagliani also helped out with music through the rehearsal process. Tagliani describes the music of the show as lively, sweet and humorous. Each song has its own individual theme from 50s style rock and roll, a lovely folk style, and even hysterical mixed with dramatic!
A cast of over a dozen young actors shine onstage. They were all encouraged by their director and a small cast of adult actors. Beckett Guest who plays the role of the energetic Charlie Bradley said that although it is a tight schedule he has very much enjoyed putting the pieces together alongside his castmates.
When asked about the message within the story everyone had something different to say. The show is all about compassion, the power of love, and kindness and goodwill. By accepting the Herdmans and giving them a second chance, we put aside our differences and become friends. You never know what hidden challenges one is facing.
We’re counting on you to buy your tickets before the Herdmans steal every single one of them. Come out with your whole family and catch the show.
