Star Trek Discovery reintroduced Star Trek to the small screen for the first time in near two decades. This has allowed a new generation to boldly go where no one has gone before, through their adventures. The show even broke away from continuing where Star Trek Voyager left off in the 24th century and instead headed back in time to roughly ten years before Kirk set off with the U.S.S Enterprise for a five year mission. Star Trek Discovery showed fans of the iconic conflict, often referenced in Star Trek, between the Federation and the Klingon Empire which was resolved come the conclusion of the first season. Now into the second season, stronger links have started to be made between the Discovery and the Enterprise.

Now with Captain Pike, the original captain to the Enterprise, and Spock having visions of a mysterious "red angel" appearing across the galaxy, the crew have been on a mission to solve the mystery of what this "red angel" is. Now halfway through the series it has been revealed these "red angels" are appearing to try and stop the end of all sentient life in the galaxy. But you have to consider what could be strong enough to accomplish such a massive objective.

The "Red Angel" Appears

One thing that is obvious, whatever the "red angel" is that it holds technology far beyond Starfleet, the Klingons and the Vulcans. In fact it is arguable that few races in the entire franchise have showcased such technology, but there is one likely candidate, the Iconians. Some may think, we would know if it were as you would recognise them, but so far the race itself has never appear in a Star Trek show or movie.

An Iconian Gateway

Iconians had vanished from the galaxy when first introduced in Star Trek The Next Generation. The only proof of the civilisation was the discovery of a Gateway that could send a person anywhere in the galaxy instantly. This was proof of the sheer technological abilities of the race and a second Gateway was discovered in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. In both cases the Gateways were destroyed as they were deemed to dangerous, as they could be used for invading armies to take down planets easily. But, the Iconians have received one incarnation and that was through the game Star Trek Online.

The Iconian Herald in 'Star Trek Online'

The Iconians were large and powerful in the game.

Both the "red angel" and the Iconians in Star Trek Online held these long bars from their back to create wings and hold elegant poses. The Iconians even had a similar plan in Star Trek Online aiming to retake the galaxy for themselves by wiping out the other races. It is arguable that the red angel has a far more human based physique, as the Iconians in the game were larger and much longer in body length. But, this would mean CGI would need to be used much more in the show, especially if they are planned to appear before the season finale. So the show may have taken some artistic liberties and altered the races appearance from the game. Another option is the suit worn by the "red angel" is of Iconian origin, but is being worn by a human, most likely Micheal Burnham.

With Star Trek Discovery moving away from the conventions of the older shows, it is possible they are set to finally debut an alien race that has been teased as the most powerful forces in the galaxy. Time will tell who and what the "red angel" is and here is hoping for some Iconian action in the show as they seem the only race capable of wiping out all sentient life in the galaxy.
