It all began in 1994, with the release of the first Stargate movie. The decades that followed saw a series of hit sci-fi shows, Stargate: SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, and the ill-fated Stargate Universe. At San Diego Comic-Con 2017, MGM has revealed that we're about to step back through the Gate and return to the worlds we know and love. It's time to learn the secret origin of the Stargate!

A New Digital Project

The new series — which will consist of ten 10-minute episodes — stands at the center of MGM's new digital initiative. Recognizing the passion of the Stargate fandom, they're setting up a new digital platform known as Stargate Command. This will be a subscription-based site where fans can enjoy both news and content. #StargateOrigins Season 1 will be the first new content on the site, and Kevin Conroy, president of Digital and new platforms at MGM, made it clear just how excited he is about this prospect.

"We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure. We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins."

The story will center on the character of Catherine Langford (originally played by Elizabeth Hoffman), and will tell of her original adventures with the portal. We've had a dearth of new Stargate content since Stargate Universe ended six years ago, and it's thrilling to see this return. Fans had noticed that the series was gradually being pulled off of streaming sites like Netflix, and now we know why; MGM is launching their own digital initiative.

Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan and writers Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry are working on the project now, with filming scheduled to begin in August. Fans of the #scifi classic will no doubt be thrilled, watching for more news with real excitement. #SDCC 2017 has already given us a lot of shocks and surprises, but this one is most definitely welcome.
