Straight Outta Norway: RebbKatt Talks Cosplay, Armor, And The Norwegian Cosplay Scene
I recently had a chance to sit down and have a chat with RebbKatt (which was no small task because time zones are hilarious like that).
I talked about Norwegian cosplayer, RebbKatt, and her insanely good N7 armor back in November and I've been wondering about how the hell that thing got put together ever since. I finally got my answer when I recently had a chance to sit down and have a chat with her (which was no small task because time zones are hilarious like that).
What's the cosplay scene like over there? It's obviously a big thing in the US but how about over there?
Diverse and beautiful! But also a very small close-knit community
What got you into cosplay in the first place?
I watched cosplay skits online and thought it looked like so much fun! I really wanted to try it out (and I'd been wanting to go to a convention for a while), so I had my mom help me make a Catwoman suit! I've always loved the animated Batman series (and the Catwoman movie fascinated me as a kid), so it was an obvious choice.
How'd you make the jump from Catwoman to full on N7 armor? The learning curve seems pretty insane.
I wanted to cosplay Shepard after playing ME2, and carried the idea with me for a year before I decided to jump into it. Which was horrendously difficult, seeing as there aren't many female N7 armor templates. So I made my own from looking at the in-game armor from ME3.
It took me 2-3 months to get it ready for the competition in which I qualified for the Nordic Cosplay Championship with it... but after that I spent 2 months improving it. Working on and off between school and life, of course. I didn't work very intensively.
What materials did you use?
I cut EVA-foam mats with disposable blades, shaped it with a heatgun, glued stuff together with a gluegun (though contact glue is better for foam, to be honest, but hotglue is basically universal), sew a bodysuit with a good sewing machine and good scissors and needles
That's sounds pretty intense to me, but what do I know. So what's next in the queue for you?
My next project will probably be Cassandra Pentaghast from Dragon Age: Inquisition... because I LOVE her so much
She is our lord and savior, yes. Her cheekbones bless us all.
Ohhhhh my god yes
Last thing. If you had to build a "cosplayer's starter kit" what would be in it?
Oooh, good question! Hmm... well, a sewing machine, gluegun, heatgun, some good knives and such (disposable blades can be all right for cutting foam if you keep them sharp/switch them a lot!), fabric scissors (they're much better than normal, but can be used on NOTHING but fabric, or they'll be worthless). I basically only used those tools for making my Shepard.
So I finally got my answer and I got to talk to a pretty cool human being in the process. It was a solid day as far as I was concerned. While she did reveal that she'll be retiring the N7 Armor soon, there's a lot of cool stuff in the pipeline for RebbKatt so she's definitely one to keep an eye on. You can catch her on her Facebook fan page or streaming on Twitch so go show her some love!
