An Obsession

Season 3 of Stranger Things dropped on July 4th to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations in America, which mirror the festivities in the show. With any new season of a show, you always have that worry—is it going to be as good as the previous season? The answer in this case is a resounding YES!

Warning - Spoilers Ahead. Stop reading if you have not caught up with the latest season yet.

The story picks up in the summer of 1985. The kids are kids no longer, now 14; they are growing up and learning some harsh truths as they do. For the first time in a long time, things are normal for them. So of course, everything is going to go wrong.

Unbeknown to our heroes, the Russians have learned about the gate to the Upside Down and are attempting to reopen the door that Eleven closed at the end of Season Two. Evil descends on Hawkins once more and this time it is trying something new. A new Mind Flayer is taking over the local residents, possessing them, including Max's wicked stepbrother Billy.

There are so many references in this season that it makes your head spin! They touch on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Terminator, and The Blob to name a few. It is part of what makes the show great, along with some awesome 80s stars. This season we have Cary Elwes as the corrupt mayor. I think that these actors add a real touch of nostalgia to the show. We also see the brief return of Paul Reiser who played Burke in Aliens in 1986.

Something this season has more than other seasons is humor. I have never laughed so hard in my life. Hopper particularly has some great scenes. Raising a teenage girl has certainly taken a toll on him. His team up with Joyce is incredibly entertaining. Joyce is one character who seems to come back better than before with each passing year.

Once more our heroes break into groups—the young teens, the older teens, and the adults, as they investigate strange things in Hawkins that are seemingly unrelated at first, before coming together to take down the new big bad. The introduction of the new mall offers some great scenes and a suitable locale for the final battle. Steve, in his Scoops Ahoy sailor outfit, is something to behold. Team Steve all the way. His scenes with Dustin are hilarious and they make a great team. New additions Robin and Erica completed the team as they tired to decipher a Russian code, which Dustin picked up on his radio.

The final battle was epic! Lives were lost, others saved, and Hawkins was saved once more. I was really surprised over Billy's heroic final act, it was unexpected and offered his character some redemption after everything that he did. I admit, I shed a tear or two over it. His bravery gave Joyce time to get the gate closed, which cut the Mind Flayer off from the Upside Down, killing it.

It was hard not to binge when the episodes moved so fast, with barely enough time to catch your breath before the next drama unfolded. With only eight episodes, the pace suited the story and ensured that there were no boring moments.

With the Duffer Brothers ready for a Season Four, it looks like this show is going from strength to strength. What is next for our plucky heroes? And who is in that Russian cell? Hopefully Netflix will renew soon so we can find out.
