Io Capitano (2023) Movie Review
Matteo Garrone, the Italian director renowned for his stark portrayals of human nature, showcases his talent for capturing the depths of human cruelty in "Io Capitano." Unlike his previous works, Garrone's latest film follows the journey of two Senegalese cousins, Seydou and Moussa, as they embark on a perilous quest from Dakar to Europe. While their aspirations initially paint their adventure as a classic quest for fame and fortune, the harsh realities of migration soon shatter their innocence.

"In these hills, survival comes with a price tag soaked in blood," purrs Big Cat (Andie MacDowell), a formidable Appalachian drug lord, moments before her henchmen offer a grisly sacrifice to her guard dogs. This gritty narrative sets the tone for "Red Right Hand," a gritty crime thriller penned by first-time screenwriter Jonathan Easley and helmed by directors Ian and Eshom Nelms, echoing the thematic undercurrents of their 2017 hit, "Small Town Crime."

In "All of Us Strangers," Andrew Scott embodies a profound ache that stretches across his features with thunderous intensity. His eyes, softly lidded, and his lips twisted, convey a haunting portrayal in Andrew Haigh's melancholic ghost story. Here, amidst the echoes of unsaid words, Scott, renowned for his fierce intelligence, delivers the pinnacle of his career, infusing shrewdness with tragedy.

Hey, nearest and dearest, Prime Video has just dropped its latest series, Poacher, and personally, I'm pretty impressed with the trailer. Now, the big question is: will this show reel us in completely, keeping us hooked and booked, or is it just another attempt at entertainment that might not hit the mark?

Live Action Avatar the Last Airbender
I had a very short list of must haves for this first season. I gave this show so much leeway, and I tried very hard to be open minded about the inevitable changes that were going to be made to this show. I have complained a lot about said changes because they were all unnecessary and executed very poorly. But words can not express how happy I am that they kept the sexism of the Northern Water Tribe. It is so integral to Katara’s character development and so important to the story as a whole.

Again the bare minimum of this show has been fulfilled. The monster design looks really good but there is just no depth to the actual body of the show. All of the storylines are so hollow. I think they brought Sokka and Katara to the spirit world in an attempt at cheap character development because they have fucked it up until this point. But again it just comes across as an unearned moment. You wouldn’t need to change a bunch of shit to fill out these characters if you just did what you were supposed to do the first time. This shouldn’t be the first time we see any actual depth to these characters, it's episode 5, that is inexcusable.

So we know that I am known for reading, analyzing, and writing about superhero comics. That is definitely the genre where my expertise lies. That said, there are some excellent non-superhero comics that I would love to recommend. These are from a few different genres. We’ve got some cozy ones, some action, magic and mystery but all non-superhero comics so that there is something for everyone.

Iroh and Aang are captured together, again before we meet Bumi. I would love to know what the hell was going on in that writers room. What led to the decision to just fuck structure and season distinctions? Why exactly did you think that these storylines needed to happen now? Why did we decide to cut actual season 1 moments that would have helped the impact of these eventual storylines? And why exactly don’t you people seem to understand storytelling 101? Here's the deal adaptations are the easiest, simplest form of writing. They take little to no knowledge, creativity or even thought and yet these writers weren't even capable of that. If you are trained as a writer adaptations are easy work, this is ridiculous.

We are starting to get better, past the first episode it has at least become watchable. We still seem to be having a problem with exposition, but at least the dialogue and delivery has gotten better. The other problem this show faces is its tone. For some reason they wanted to make it darker as if the show didn’t already deal with war, grief, and genocide. At its core it was a kids show. Now it was never JUST a kids show, like I said there were always some very heavy themes and the show got plenty dark but this show centers around children. Which means that they are going to be goofy and get distracted easily and that’s why the show is timeless, it's why it's multi-generational, it's why this show is so impactful and so rewatchable. And the Netflix version is gutting the show of its personality and charm.

This live action adaptation is riddled with problems. And the biggest one is that all these problems are really easy to fix. They are stupid mistakes and it feels like a film students senior project and not like it was made by professionals and developed over years. Most of the technical elements are at about 70-80% but that last 20-30% is very incohesive. I am holding out hope that the first episode is not indicative of the overall season quality.
