A scene from Terminator: Genisys

Synopsis

When the United States activates an Internet-based Artificial Intelligence program, created by Cyberdyne Systems for cyber-security defense, it becomes self-aware. The AI program called 'Skynet' has one goal: To wipe out all humanity. The last surviving humans form a Resistance Force, which is led by John Connor. When they discover that Skynet has developed a way to time travel and tip the odds of the war, the leader decides to do the same! First, by sending a human volunteer from the Resistance back in time, John Connor hopes to ensure the survival of himself and the destruction of Skynet's creation. Every successful venture to the past only changes the timeline further and delays the inevitable. Eventually, Skynet gets activated and the world as we know it becomes a war zone between humans and the AI we created!

Terminator: 6

The newest movie (number 6) in the sequels, will feature some new faces to the story. James Cameron, who was the producer for the first two films, Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, will be working with producer David Ellison. The director for Deadpool, Jim Miller, will also be working on the un-named Terminator movie. The two much-loved characters that made Terminator famous, Arnold Schwarzenegger (who was the good ole original T-800 model) and Linda Hamilton, join in the fun! But, word on the net is that Linda's reprised character, Sarah Connor, will be joined by two new characters, acted by Natalia Reyes and Mackenzie Davis.

Women Save Mankind

Natalia Reyes (Left), Mackenzie Davis (Middle), and Linda Hamilton (with the weapons, Right)

I'm just going to refer to this sequel as Terminator: 6, even though it's rumored to be the second installment of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I cannot imagine what the writers, director, and producers have in store for us die-hard fans of the sequels! I still remember the first time I saw the first Terminator (1984), on rented VHS tape. Back then, almost everyone had a VCR that played either VHS or Beta tapes (and we thought THAT was cutting-edge technology!). It's very 80's and you can see how naïve Sarah Connor was about her role as the mother of John Connor, in comparison to later. I don't know how anyone can manage to fall in love when you're on the run from a psychotic AI, but I guess it could happen!

When the second movie, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), came out, I saw it in a tiny theater while vacationing in Connecticut. It blew me away! Yes, I was an Eddie Furlong fan after the move! (Who wasn't?) And yes, the Guns N' Roses song 'You could be Mine' became one of THE most overplayed songs in the following few years, all because of that movie! (I'm listening to it as I edit this!) But, the nightmares that comprise of an AI made of indestructible liquid metal hell-bent on completing one mission: Kill John Connor (portrayed by Eddie Furlong), could only be stopped by watching every single second of that movie!

He'll be back!

T2: Judgement Day

Who doesn't get choked up when the only stable father-figure John has ever known terminates himself? His main mission complete, he has to prevent the AI technology that is all him, from being discovered and created. His self-termination is SO sad!! It was almost like in The Fly 2... I cried during that movie, too! But I'm here to write about the Terminator movies, so let's move along! When another Terminator pops up with a new mission in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), the timeline is changed. Skynet is still set to go online and become self-aware, and they still want to wipe out humanity, but... the Terminators have all failed in their mission to kill Resistance Leader John Connor before all that happens! Not only does this new deadly AI have serious sex appeal, she needs to locate and then terminate the now reclusive John Connor, his lieutenants, and a United States General.

Well, in Terminator: Salvation (2009) and Genisys (2015) Skynet is STILL trying to take out humanity, as well as John Connor. In Salvation, which has Christian Bale as John Connor, we see what goes on after the Resistance comes together. John discovers a certain Terminator (Hmm, now I wonder which model?) is set to come online earlier than expected! Genisys follows Reese (Jai Courtney), who you'll remember as the Resistance volunteer from the very first Terminator. Only he arrives at an alternate reality when he time jumps to the past, due to Skynet not launching their anticipated attack. He finds Sarah Connor was raised by a Terminator that was sent by someone unknown. Since its mission has been solely to protect her, we know the threat of Skynet is still imminent!

All I can wonder for the next Terminator sequel is: What now?? I guess we'll all have to wait until Black Friday 2019 to find out!
