The breathtaking series Luther has been a huge hit for the BBC since Season 1 launched in 2010, with fans begging for another series following the close of Season 4 in 2015. Now, the #BBC has finally given fans the tidings we'd hoped for, with a new season officially announced — and the double blessing of Idris Elba making his comeback to the British crime drama.

According to the BBC announcement, the fifth season of #Luther will be a four-part series and is described as "utterly heart stopping and unmissable."

The Decision To Bring Luther Back For Series 5

Series co-creator and writer Neil Cross explained how the decision was made to bring us a fifth season following a longer-than-typical wait since 2015's Season 4:

"It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business."The thing is, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question."In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to find out what happens next."

Of course, fans are happy to see the series return, but #IdrisElba seems more excited than anyone, saying in his statement:

“Neil [Cross], the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on.”

Filming for the coming season is expected to commence in early 2018, with a release date yet to be announced. While many fans had been hoping to see Luther transform into a feature-length theatrical release, we might still see the gripping series on the big screen in years to come.

Additional information regarding the new series is expected to be released over the coming months, so why not head on over to #Netflix and binge-watch seasons 1–4 in preparation for Season 5?
