Now that The Defenders has finally debuted, the newest installment in Netflix based Marvel series has everyone buzzing. One of the biggest questions left unanswered after the conclusion relates to the mysterious resurgence of Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil.

Warning: the following section contains spoilers for The Defenders

After the climactic battle with the Hand, it appeared as though Daredevil would end up being a casualty of war. Fortunately, the final scene of The Defenders revealed that Matt Murdock actually survived the building collapse at Midland Circle. Although his escape from certain death was pivotal, it wasn't the biggest takeaway of Murdock's final moments of the season.

During the aforementioned scene where Matt is recovering, one of the nuns taking care of him calls for Maggie when he begins to stir. Matt's mother is Maggie Murdock, so this could be foreshadowing of presence in future seasons of Daredevil. The nuns didn't recite her full name, but fans of the comics know the scene was a homage to the Born Again comics, which features Maggie at one point.

When executive producer of The Defenders Marco Ramirez talked to Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that the scene was in fact a callback to the Born Again event from the comics. Ramirez didn't specifically say the imagery was referencing Maggie Murdock, but here are his full comments on the matter:

"I can't confirm anything. I can say that visually that shot at the end of Daredevil’s story was definitely an homage, as were a couple of other scenes, to the comics.

While Ramirez refuses to confirm or deny the existence of Maggie Murdock, the notion of the Born Again comics providing some level of influence on that final scene of The Defenders is more than enough evidence to suggest Maggie might make an appearance. But before speculating on whether or not Maggie has a role to play, let's look at Maggie Murdock's origins in the Born Again comics for more insight into her character.

In those comics, Maggie returns to Matt's life after decades of being absent. She finds a broken Matt, lying in front of his father's old gym and takes him to the local church she works at to recover. Unfortunately, Maggie doesn't reveal her identity to her son. She even resorts to lying to Matt about her true identity. Matt figures out she's his mother after he asks her directly and hears her heart skip a beat. At that point, Matt knows who she is and moves on.

As for Season 3 of Daredevil, we'll have to wait and see what the plot will entail. There's no guarantee Maggie Murdock will show up, or even if the Born Again comics are going to influence the season more than the homage from The Defenders did, but we shouldn't be surprised if that's the direction taken when Matt Murdock makes his return.
