'The Devil Wears Prada'

... in 2018.

(Spoiler free)

For many years, I've heard about this movie. How it was a great film and several references here and there (Like in The Office; when Micheal pretended to be one of the characters), and I finally decided to sit down and watch it. After all, I hate to miss out on all the fun.

Now coming into this, I had no idea what to expect, I read no reviews and didn't even watch the trailer, I just jumped in. Which was a mistake. If I could go back, I would have at least watched the trailer and looked up its ratings. Here I am, expecting a rom-com, but no, it was more drama/comedy. Which isn't a bad thing, but if you're in the mood for something light and slightly cheesy (I could go for a grilled cheese right now), then this isn't for that mood. Its like when you're in the mood for chocolate and you're given white chocolate. Like it's not terrible, but it's not what I wanted... still, I'll take it.

Now this movie had a very serious tone, which I didn't expect knowing that Anne Hathaway was in it. I've only mostly seen Hathaway do comedies, rom-coms, and some action. Though yes she was great. So was Meryl Streep and everyone else. Really I had no problems with the actors, they were phenomenal.

Now I say that this movie captures what the essence of 2006 was almost perfectly, the good AND the bad.

The good:

A woman being portrayed as a serious boss, who knows what she wants. Though yes many times it was frustrating to see Meryl Streeps' character (Miranda) be as heartless as she was, you sort of see where she is coming from. She had a tough persona, though, behind all of that, she was going through some serious issues. She was someone you love to hate and hate to love.

The bad:

The fatphobic comments and the white privilege that a lot of us can't relate to.

Let me say this real quick: BEING FAT IS NOT BAD.

But of course, I doubt a lot of us would have said or agreed with this in 2006. But it is 2018. We have fat (plus-size) models who are gorgeous along thin models. Now here is a quote from the movie:

Andy: So, none of the girls here eat anything?Nigel: Not since two became the new four and zero became the new two.Andy: Well, I'm a six.Nigel: Which is the new fourteen.

Yes, it was meant to be something we laugh at, but I didn't crack a smile.

Times truly have changed, and boy I am sure glad that they did.

Now about the white privilege.

A quick lesson if you don't know what it is:

white privilege is when someone who is/identifies to be Caucasian is born with a head start in life. Basically, life would be much easier if you were white. And Andy is a perfect example.

I don't want to get too much into detail about it because this article gives some great points and basically sums up what I mean: "13 Reasons Andy From "The Devil Wears Prada" Is Actually Just A Privileged White Girl"

In the end, yes it was an enjoyable movie, not one of my favorites, and that is something to be said because I like almost every movie. But still, it had a nice plot, funny moments, and beautiful outfits.

There are rumors that there is going to be a sequel to the original. I would actually really like that, there were some loose ends in the end that need to be solved, and I know for sure that The Devil Wears Prada 2 would serve more looks and be less problematic.
