The Disney Remake You Didn't Know You Wanted

Of all the Disney animated movies that can be remade, this is the one that you want the most. Trust me.

That's right, A Goofy Movie. Before I get into the reasons why, let me explain my stance on Disney remakes first. I remember going to the theaters with my family and seeing my first Disney movie on the big screen, Aladdin, which is my favorite Disney movie of all time. When the announcement was made that Aladdin was going to be made into a live-action movie, I did an eye roll that rivaled Princess Jasmine’s. Over the past few years, Disney has been doing live-action remakes of their animated classics. I can’t help but wonder “who asked for this?” Not that movie studios have ever cared what we want as consumers to begin with. But with Disney, I can say they are responding to what the people are asking for.

There have been cases of backlash for some of their casting with Mulan and Aladdin, which has been reported to have been corrected. Alongside Mulan and Aladdin coming in the future, there’s also going to be a The Lion King remake. The Beauty and the Beast remake was the highest grossing movie of 2017 at $1.2 billion worldwide, so clearly the audience is enjoying them and wanting them to be at their best. There’s a lot of excitement behind these films and I just haven’t been moved by either of these announcements. Maybe it’s because I have “get off my lawn” syndrome when it comes to reboots and remakes, but there is an exception. Literally only one animated Disney movie exists that I’d love to see as a live-action remake and that movie is my second favorite Disney movie of all time, A Goofy Movie.

Upon its initial release, A Goofy Movie wasn’t as well-received as two other Disney movies that came out the same year, Pocahontas and Toy Story. Over the past few years, the movie has gained the popularity and praise it deserved over 20 years ago. There has been a reunion by the voice cast and production team of A Goofy Movie and a concert mashup tribute you can find on YouTube to the iconic and inspirational tune “Stand Out” and lead single “I 2 I.” While there have been a couple years between these two events, Disney still has an opportunity to do something a little different. You have a single father raising his teenage son that takes him on a road trip in order to rekindle the bond they once had since he feels like he’s slipping away. That’s just magic waiting to happen in a live-action setting. A father/son road trip musical comedy? I’m all over that, especially if the casting is done right. Which I happen to already have a dream cast list ready to go in case Disney gives me a call. Which they won’t. One can dream.

Maximilian "Max" Goof Played by Caleb McLaughin

Caleb McLaughin is at the height of his young career with the booming success of Stranger Things. He even showed off his singing and dancing chops as Ricky Bell in The New Edition Story. Caleb’s charming and kind nature would make him the perfect Max.

Goofy Goof Played by Jamie Foxx

This was a tough one to try and decide on who to play the iconic Goofy Goof. One has to be able to sing, dance, act, and be as goofy as the man-er, dog himself. Not too many actors are as diverse and talented as Jamie Foxx who meets every one of these characteristics with ease. Jamie Foxx is as big of a name as Goofy himself.

Roxanne Played by Allegra Acosta

Allegra is a newcomer on the acting scene, playing Molly Hernandez on the Marvel comic adaptation hit Runaways. She has the girl-next-door charm and look that made our hero Max fall head over heels. Not that it matters for this role since Roxanne has no singing parts, but Allegra also has a set of pipes of her own.

Peter Pete Played by Luis Guzman

The antihero Peter Pete should be played by someone as rough and gruff as the big cat himself. Why not Luis Guzman? Guzman has made a successful and lengthy career out of being the sidekick and comedic relief, I think he’ll do Pete the justice that’s needed.

P.J. Pete Played by Rico Rodriguez

P.J. is about as much of a nice guy as Max, if not nicer. It’s only right that the Modern Family kid star play this role. I think it would be interesting to see Rico play a character the opposite of Manny Delgado, who’s known for his confidence and maturity. P.J. is pretty timid and is more of a follower of Max than a leader. Still, he’d be a great friend to stand alongside Lucas as Max.

Stacey Played by Kiernan Shipka

Stacey is the best friend of Roxanne but so much more. She’s stylish, intelligent, outgoing, and the student body president. Kiernan Shipka can deliver as the supportive BFF of Roxanne. For being so young, Kiernan already has over 30 credits to her name across film and television. One of them playing Sally Draper in Mad Men. She just scored the lead for Sabrina in the reprise of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Robert "Bobby" Zimmeruski Played by Isaak Presley

Bobby has one of the most memorable lines in the movie when Max and P.J. pay him for his A/V Club services with a can of Cheez Whiz. Someone would have to nail that line as well as the laid-back surfer persona of troublemaker Robert Zimmeruski. If you’ve seen the Netflix hit, Fuller House, then you’d know all about Isaak Presley as Bobby Popko, making him the perfect fit. They already have the same name!

Powerline Played by Tevin Campbell

There really doesn’t need to be an explanation for this, but I’ll give one for the sake of the 2000s babies not knowing the greatness of Tevin Campbell. There is no one else to play this role but the R&B legend Tevin, who lent his vocals for the movie’s mega superstar, Powerline. But, as we know, Powerline is a young artist and Tevin’s stardom was in the 90s. If I had a time machine, I’d go back and get him. So, if not Tevin then I believe this R&B crooner would be able to fill Tevin’s shoes.

Powerline Played by Miguel Pimentel

Miguel has the range and youth in order to do Powerline proper justice. His artistry and style has been compared to the legendary Prince. Someone would just have to teach Miguel how to hit the Perfect Cast.
