The Fall of the Throne

The 'Game of Thrones' Outrage

We have arrived at the end of a series that has been a part of us since 2011. 73 episodes.

We witnessed the demise of characters that were dear to us and we cheered when others met a justifiable, brutal end. Yes, as fans of Game of Thrones (GoT), we were emotionally invested in the final season. Was it perfect? No. I don't think I have seen anyone state, "You know, I'm perfectly fine with the events that unfolded for the characters that made it to the final season." However, I have never seen this kind of outrage from certain people. I've seen that ridiculous petition that wanted the final season to be rewritten and filmed to the way that the "fans" wanted. I am curious, though, out of the thousands upon thousands that signed it, who gets to decide what the "proper" end is? I have seen the virtue signalers stating that the show wasn't diverse enough and that HBO should be ashamed.

The list of the shrieks is too much to list here.

Here's what a lot of people are forgetting. This show wasn't an original series. This show is based on a series of ongoing NOVELS created by George R.R. Martin. Martin, the AUTHOR, was the one that handed in the outline of how the series was going to end. Sure, the books might deviate a little from character to character but he said that the overall outcome would be the same.

"But my character wouldn't have done this or that," some say. Here's the thing, it's not your character. You weren't the one that created notes and outlines and a path for these characters at 2 in the morning. You weren't the one that rewrote character progression over and over and over.

For the record, I wasn't expecting Bran to become king. I honestly thought that Jon would reluctantly sit on the throne after the Dragon would refuse Danny's orders to burn Jon because she saw him as a threat to her throne. I did predict that the "madness" would be passed onto her much as her father had. I thought that Cersei would somehow escape, take refuge on a farm where years later, we would see Arya fulfill her list of names and finally end the evil woman. Point is, none of these expectations of mine came to fruition. And I am ok with that. I still feel sad that the show has come to a close (until the prequel series). Could the final season have been better? Yes. But at the end of the day, this wasn't MY show. This wasn't MY story to tell. I, like many others, was along for the ride.

If we are so brazen to think, "I could do better," then, by all means, invest yourself into creating characters and writing for hours upon hours. Endure the endless pitch/query letters that you have to send to agencies just to get representation. Or deal with the disappointment when a board votes against taking on your project because one member feels that there's not a market for your work. And when you finally make it. When you finally get published and your work is admired and hated at the same time, then you will have a rightful claim to "these are my characters."
