Doctor Strange may still be out at the cinemas, but fan attention is turning to the next chapter of the MCU — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A sequel to 2014's unexpected blockbuster hit, GotGVol2 is easily one of the most hotly-anticipated films of 2017. Last weekend, #Marvel Studios released a new trailer — and it's already breaking records!

Here are the Facts

Let me give you a sense of just how tremendous a success this is. GotGVol2's latest trailer has been watched more than any other trailer on YouTube, with the notable exception of the much-anticipated Beauty and the Beast. That means, among other things, that it's officially:

  • The most watched superhero trailer of all time
  • The most watched Marvel Studios trailer of all time

Showing the power of the brand, the trailer featured "Fox on the Run" by Sweet which rose to number one on the iTunes rock chart over the weekend.

You want to know what makes this even better? As James Gunn observed on Facebook, the trailer debuted on a Saturday night. According to conventional wisdom, this is the one time when you do not release a trailer.

It turns out what we've seen wasn't even the full trailer! Giving a mind-blown, overjoyed "thank you" post on Facebook, James Gunn commented:

"HUGE THANKS to the smart and kind marketing folks at Marvel and Disney who put up with all my eccentricities during the teaser editing process. Honestly. You guys can't imagine what they deal with. I'm a maniac. Now they're gonna have to deal with it again as we prep the FULL TRAILER..."

Yes, that's right. In Gunn's words, this wasn't the trailer — this was a teaser in advance of the full trailer! And it's already broken so many records.

Just How Big Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 be?

Next year is a massive year for superhero films, but #GuardainsoftheGalaxy2 may be Marvel's biggest yet. I mean, 2017 will see Tom Holland star in Spider-Man: Homecoming (sure to be a blockbuster hit), and Thor: Ragnarok is a vital part of the journey to Avengers: Infinity War, but reactions to the trailer suggest GotGVol2 could blast this competition out of the water.

It's a tremendously amusing possibility, especially when you consider that the first Guardians of the Galaxy was seen as a risky proposition. I mean, this was a franchise nobody had really heard of, starring a ragtag bunch of a**-holes who barely knew how to work as a team. One of them was a talking raccoon, and another one was a walking tree. Many Marvel fans were convinced that would be the moment when the studio jumped the shark. Instead, Guardians of the Galaxy was an unexpected hit, the characters and concepts are dearly loved.

That being said, I do think there's one other reason GotGVol2 is setting up to be a blockbuster: James Gunn himself. Gunn devotes an incredible amount of time to interacting with fans — he even does regular FAQs on Facebook — and it's not unusual for him to be chatting away for hours on Twitter. He treats fans with friendship and respect, right down to Tweets like these as part of a conversation:

When you interact with fans enough to be wishing them happy birthday, it's no wonder they're willing to get behind your film.

2017 is probably the most exciting year to date for superhero fans, but if fan reaction to this trailer is anything to go by — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may well be one of the year's greatest hits. That said, I wonder what fan reaction to the full trailer will look like!
