The Lego Batman Movie: 13 Cameos That Expand The Dark Knight's World

With his spectacular abs, gadgets aplenty and a wave of rave reviews, The Lego Batman Movie is an unequivocal hit.

Focused on Will Arnett’s silly (and stubborn) version of the Caped Crusader, The Lego Batman Movie sees Batman tackle a host of super-villains, led by the Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis. But beating bad guys isn't the only challenge our daring hero faces — he also must confront the perils of parenthood when he accidentally adopts the young Dick Grayson (Michael Cera). And so, a hilariously madcap deconstruction of Batman — and his place in pop-culture — unfolds!

Batman’s brick-based adventure contains more witty one-liners and Easter eggs than you can shake a Batarang at, yet there are also a lot of actors, and characters, who unexpectedly make an appearance in this frenetic film. So here is a guide to all of the craziest cameos in The Lego Batman Movie!

13. Superman, Green Lantern And The Justice League

After seeing members of the Justice League in #TheLegoMovie and the promotional footage for Batman's spinoff, their appearance here isn't exactly a surprise.

During The Lego Batman Movie, Batman and Robin find the whole Justice League gang partying the night away in the Fortress of Solitude. We don't get to spend too long with them, because Krypto the Wonder Dog is laying down sick beats! Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Hawkman (and Girl) and Martian Manhunter are far too busy grooving to stop and chat!

Regrettably, Cobie Smulders doesn't seem to have returned as #WonderWoman. However, we do get Adam DeVine of Modern Family fame filling in as #TheFlash. Plus there's the return of Channing Tatum’s #Superman, who makes awkward excuses for not inviting Batman to the #JusticeLeague's party. And the Lego version of the Man of Steel wouldn't be complete without the overly eager and somewhat sycophantic #GreenLantern in tow (played again by Jonah Hill).

12. Matt Villa and Chris McKay as Killer Croc And Pilot Bill

From Alfred Hitchcock to Orson Welles, many filmmakers have cameoed in their own work. Stan Lee made a whole career of cameoing in films based on properties he created.

Clearly not content with dishing out parts to other people, the filmmakers behind The Lego Batman Movie couldn't resist joining in themselves. The movie's editor Matt Villa can briefly be heard as none other than Waylon Jones (Killer Croc to me and you), who happily plants a sizable bomb and loudly declares:

"I finally got to do something!"

Is this a reference to Croc's tiny role in Suicide Squad? Or even more evidence of the film's Suicide Squad bashing? Or is the movie harmlessly poking fun at the fact that Croc doesn't get to appear as much as the other DC villains? Either way, it's a brilliantly funny little moment among so many others.

Additionally, the film's director Chris McKay appears as the slightly less-recognizable Pilot Bill, one of the men whom the Joker subdues aboard the bomb-filled plane at the start of the movie.

11. Mariah Carey As Mayor McCaskill

We knew Mariah Carey would appear, but we were still surprised to hear her voice! The celebrity Diva-in-Chief briefly appears at Gotham City’s Winter Gala, where she happily announces that Barbara Gordon will be replacing her dear old dad as the city commissioner. And speaking of that mustachioed man...

10. Héctor Elizondo As Commissioner Gordon

Elizondo may not be the biggest name in the film, even though he had notable roles in Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries. It’s also worth mentioning that his role in The Lego Batman Movie is not his first brush with the DC Universe; indeed, he played Lt. Cragger in the Justice League animated series, and he also lent his voice to Bane in the direct-to-video Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. A nice bit of extra trivia for you Bat-fans out there.

9. Conan O'Brien As Riddler

In The Lego Batman Movie, the famously coiffed comedian gets to channel his talents into the Lego universe's version of this sarcastic and infamously punny criminal, who joins Joker to take on Batman.

8. Zoë Kravitz As Catwoman

The young star of X-Men: First Class and the Fantastic Beasts series made her Lego universe debut as the wily Selina Kyle. However, don't go into this movie expecting much in the way of dialogue from her. As she interacts with her villainous comrades, Catwoman’s lines are mainly — or rather, only — different variations upon “meow.”

7. Seth Green As King Kong

Along with all the tie-in toys, The Lego Batman Movie is a film where there is a lot of thinly veiled corporate synergy going on. Those toys aren't going to sell themselves, after all! And it's not just the toys that get a look in...

Case in point: Seth Green voices a skyscraper-climbing, Lego version of King Kong. You don’t say? Well, Kong: Skull Island, a Warner Bros. movie, is out next month — what are the chances of that?

6. 'Bruce' The Shark From Jaws

Remember the 1960s Batman series? Remember the absolutely naff shark-repellent that #AdamWest uses when a particularly toothy terror latches onto his leg? Well, Chris McKay and Warner Bros. do!

Among the plethora of pop-culture characters in this movie, a famously finned (and fanged) foe lurks in the Phantom Zone, and is unleashed upon Gotham. But his reign of terror is cut short when Robin uses the shark-repellent spray upon him — the very same spray that Batman had firmly dismissed earlier on in the film.

Huh, guess they didn't need that bigger boat after all!

5. Billy Dee Williams As Two-Face

Many Batman fans know that Williams (or Lando Calrissian to #StarWars fans) signed on for the first of Tim Burton’s Batman films as Harvey Dent, on the proviso that he could play Two-Face in later movies. Sadly, Joel Schumacher took over and chose to disregard this, opting for Tommy Lee Jones’s take on the character instead.

But good fortune has smiled upon Williams, and it's a really nice touch by the filmmakers to finally fulfill Williams' wish of playing the coin-flipping fiend...albeit very fleetingly. Still, take what you can get, eh?

4. Siri And Phyllis/ Ellie Kemper

Facing off against his colorful foes, Batman is assisted by some technical teammates. The most prevalent of these is the Bat-‘puter, who is jokingly referred to as "Siri" in the film’s end credits.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that Chris McKay had recruited someone with a similar voice for the role, but in actual fact Susan Bennett, the lady behind the ever-helpful iPhone service, did indeed lend her vocals to the picture!

And the Bat-computer is not the sole operating system in the movie. In the latter half, we are introduced to the perturbed Phyllis, guardian of the Phantom Zone, who is voiced by none other than Ellie Kemper of The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame.

3. The Daleks From 'Doctor Who'

The inclusion of the Daleks is probably one of the oddest choices for the film. Nevertheless, #DoctorWho fans (such as myself) were laughing with glee when they appeared as the screeching foot soldiers in Joker's onslaught upon Gotham City.

2. Eddie Izzard As Lord Voldemort

Another franchise that has received the Lego treatment is #HarryPotter, and the filmmakers capitalize on that fact by putting everyone’s favorite fantasy foe front-and-center in Joker’s crew. The only downside is that he doesn’t come face-to-face with Alfred Pennyworth, since Ralph Fiennes (Alfred’s voice) plays him in the original movies. Now THAT would have been brilliant to witness.

1. Jermaine Clement As Sauron

Surely this is the most outlandish inclusion of them all? New Line Cinema became a subsidiary of Warner Bros. in 2008, and director Chris McKay takes full advantage of their most iconic property: The Lord of the Rings.

The mighty dark lord Sauron assists the Joker in his conquest of Gotham, until one of the funniest moments in the movie occurs (spoiler alert!): Sauron is accidentally shot down by Godzilla’s fireball, causing the latter villain to sheepishly slink away in disgrace!

Gleefully voiced by Jermaine Clement, Sauron's appearance is relatively fleeting. If you want to hear more of Clement's voice in an animated movie, however, check out his part in Disney’s #Moana as the greedy Tamatoa.

If you think those cameos are crazy, then I'd best not mention that the Gremlins from...well...Gremlins appear, along with Count Dracula, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Kraken from Clash of the Titans, Agent Smith from The Matrix and the Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptors from Jurassic Park.

How crackers can you get? And to think that McKay initially wanted even more fan favorites in there! The Lego Batman Movie would have hit peak-insanity levels if it had included the likes of Moriarty, and HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey...and it comes damn near close as it is!
