The Magical Chair J.K. Rowling Wrote Harry Potter In Sells For $400,000
The chair that J.K. Rowling sat on while writing the very first two Harry Potter books has been sold for nearly $400,000 (£283,000) at an auction in New York City!
The 1930s was one of four mismatched chairs that J.K. Rowling picked up for free when she visited Scotland. This was way before she became famous with her magical books. Rowling originally put her chair up for auction to help support her charity in 2002.
When she was in possession of the chair, Rowling hand painted the chair with the name “Harry Potter” on it. Auctioneer James Gannon said this piece so valuable. Not only does it say “Harry Potter” on it. It also has phrases such as “O, you may not find me pretty but don’t judge on what you see,” along with “I wrote Harry Potter whilst sitting on this chair” painted across it.
The new owner of the marvelous chair wishes to remain anonymous, for obvious reasons. Seller, Gerald Gray from Manchester said the final bid “far exceeded his expectations.” He then added:
“I plan to donate 10% to J.K. Rowling’s charity, Lumos, because that’s what she did in the first place.” – Gerald Gray.
Gerald bought this chair in 2009 after his daughter, who is a Harry Potter fan, saw the chair on eBay. What an excellence piece of furniture we’d all love to have! J.K. Rowling's magical world returns to cinemas this autumn with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
