We've all seen the shocking clip: Batman awakens chained to a wall, as the Man of Steel arrives. Superman's minions kneel before him as the Man of Steel advances upon the imprisoned Dark Knight, grasps his mask, and tears it from his head...

Warner Bros. / DC are quite enjoying milking this scene for all its worth, leaving fans wondering just what's going to happen in this superhero grudge match. Texts From Superheroes described fan reactions the best, picturing the follow text messages between the two classic superheroes:

The common fan theory has been that it's nothing but a dream - a nightmare vision of the future, explaining Batman's fears over Superman. That theory's just gotten support from a surprising source...

Costume designer Michael Wilkinson said this in an interview with Omelete:

"Zack had a great idea of this sort of nightmare-ish vision, almost a vision of the future, a post-apocalyptic vision. It's like a dream that Ben has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it's like the end of the world, trying to survive and then of course Superman and his minions come, so it's sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman."
