Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Civil War) have announced that their China-based film company, Anthem, has signed a deal for them to direct a superhero film based out of China, titled The Hero's Awakening (2017). News broke of the announcement recently via sources, Variety and Deadline; reporting comments made by Joe Russo on the Russo Brother's new superhero film.

Joe Russo didn’t elaborate on the film’s content very much, but he did indicate that the film would be an "action sci-fi" film, which would also be set as a "superhero origin" story. We don’t know if the Russo Brothers will be using a Marvel owned property or a brand new superhero, specifically created for a China based audience. It is most likely that they are separate, as their China-based film company, Anthem, won’t have the property rights to any Marvel titles, hence an original concept for their new film would be required. However, the Russo Brothers could be using a Chinese owned superhero property, in which there’s already source material to base the characters and story on. Though, the probability of that happening is slim. Since the film company producing The Hero’s Awakening is owned by the Russo Brothers, it’s plausible that they have creative control over their work. Meaning their film will most likely have to originate from a new conceptualized hero, not one from Marvel or any other existing property.

The Hero's Awakening will be an all new concept, outside of the Marvel Franchise.

While some may find that hard to believe, it’s easier to accept the notion when we can note the success of the Russo Brothers in the past and present (i.e. Captain America franchise). Their newest piece of work in Captain America: Civil War has just gained them even more popularity among audiences all around the world. Along with the kind of applause they are receiving from audiences around the world over Captain America: Civil War (2016), the Russo Brothers are likely to be brimming with confidence in their creative abilities. Imbuing them with enough inspiration and courage to go forth with a brand new superhero property, which no one has heard of yet. That’s all speculative for the moment. However, we can confirm their next mainstream superhero epic will be that of the untitled, Avengers 3 in 2018.

Confirmed information on The Hero's Awakening.

What we can confirm for now is the status of The Hero’s Awakening. The report by Variety on the Russo Brother’s China based production, confirms that a deal has been signed to have the Russo Brothers produce the action, sci-fi film The Hero’s Awakening (2017). We can also confirm from the comments made by Joe Russo, in which the focal point of The Hero’s Awakening will be that of a superhero’s origins. Which confirms the theory of the Russo Brothers new production of The Hero’s Awakening being an all new creation, not based on any existing title or property. The Hero’s Awakening has been signed to a small budget of $30 million, and will be released either late 2017, or early 2018. No date has been confirmed as of yet for the film. That’s everything we know for now.

The Russo Brothers are most known for their work on Marvel films.

The Russo Brother’s current film to be seen in cinemas is that of Captain America: Civil War (2016). They are widely known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically on the Captain America films. Their latest film is that of Captain America: Civil War and they are also expected to direct both Avengers 3 and Avengers 4. Originally titled Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo Brothers confirmed their decision to rename Avengers 3 and Avengers 4, in a report to Collider.

What do you think? Will the Russo Brothers create magic once again with another superhero film in, The Hero's Awakening? Or will the film fail to reach the appropriate demographic as the film is set in a country not known for superhero epics? Or do you think Captain America: Civil War will be their last great film, before Avengers 3 that is?
