Spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 follow.
Negan returned in tonight's episode of The Walking Dead after a long time away from the spotlight, and he was quite upset after learning about what happened to Sherry.
Sherry escaped around the same time as Daryl, and Negan held Dwight responsible. Fortunately for Dwight, he got off with a light sentence this time around. He didn't get another burn to the face — which some fans expected — but he suffered quite a beating from Negan's goons. As part of his penance, Dwight was then forced to go out and search for Sherry.
Will this make Dwight join Rick like his comic book counterpart?
Dwight searches for Sherry, but has no luck in finding her — until he goes back to his old home. When he goes inside, Dwight finds a letter written for him.
Reading it, Dwight learns that Sherry has left for good. Sherry's note explains why she's left: he's no longer the man that she knew, just a Negan servant. And it seems to have broken Dwight ... but it may strengthen him in the end.
Dwight could decide to make a change in his life, a change that'll see him become like his comic book counterpart and finally stand up to Negan. If we look at the comics for some insight into what Dwight might do next, Dwight is moving towards a redemption arc, one in which he'll leave the Saviors to join Rick Grimes' army.
In the comics, Dwight defects shortly after Rick and Ezekiel form an alliance, approaching them at the Kingdom to become a part of their army. Dwight had to persuade Rick and Ezekiel into believing that he never fully trusted Negan.
After Negan is removed from his position as leader of the Saviors, Dwight takes over the group.
What will TV Dwight do next?
When Negan burned Dr. Carson alive, the Saviors looked horrified. Dwight looked quite shocked himself by the sudden murder. Dwight only expected Negan to burn Carson's face,. Apart from Dwight's reaction, it was the Saviors' reaction that we should pay attention to since they've been portrayed as unfeeling savages up until this point. This could be the first step in some of them defecting, including Dwight.
Not only are the Saviors subjected to watching torture, but doing so is torture for them as well. They live in a dire situation — any one of them could be next — so this fear would understandably lead to a revolt. But who, except for Dwight, could incite it?
Will Dwight lead a coup on Negan?
Dwight has suffered the most at Negan's hand, so tonight's act of savagery could be his final straw. If Dwight joins Rick like in the comic, it will be the biggest move he makes this season.
Whether that happens is yet to be seen, but the logical place for Dwight to go next would be Alexandria or the Kingdom.
