The last two years have seen Fox step out of their comfort zone and embrace a bold, experimental approach to X-Men movies. Next up is Josh Boone's New Mutants, which promises to be a chilling blend of "haunted house" horror and hormonal teenagers. Inspired by the legendary "Demon Bear Saga," created by comic book greats Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, it promises to transport X-Men fans into one of the most terrifying superhero films to date.

The film is scheduled for release on April 13th, 2018, and Fox has just released the first trailer. Watch it below:

What can we expect from 'New Mutants'?

Josh Boone is a massive comic book fan, and he grew up loving Claremont and Sienkiewicz's New Mutants run. He approached Fox with a pitch for a New Mutants trilogy, and took an approach that will delight any comic book fan:

"After I made The Fault in Our Stars, we made Fox a comic book. It walked them through a trilogy of New Mutant films that would build on each other. We used this program called Comic Life, and took all the images we had loved from the series and strung them together to show them the movie we wanted to do."

Yes, that's right, Josh Boone is such an #XMen fan that he made Fox a comic book in order to present his pitch. Inspired by the dark supernatural horror of the "Demon Bear Saga," which ran from New Mutants #18-21, Boone has upped the ante by creating a world in which powerful mutants are essentially "institutionalized" because they aren't safe. He's assembled an all-star cast:

  • Maisie Williams is playing the lupine Wolfsbane, a feral and repressed Scots girl.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy's tremendous performance in The Witch earned her a role as the demonic sorceress known as Magik.
  • Charlie Heaton has stepped in as the aptly-named Cannonball, a Kentucky kid who can blast himself forward in flight.
  • Henry Zaga is Sunspot, a Brazilian mutant who channels the energy of the Sun.
  • Blu Hunt is playing Danielle Moonstar, a Native American who can project illusions of your worst fears.

Rounding the heroes out is Alice Braga as Doctor Cecilia Reyes, a mutant who can generate powerful biokinetic force-fields to protect herself from harm. The team will be challenged by the terrifying threat of the Demon Bear, the creature that has stalked Danielle's family for years.

The first New Mutants trailer is everything fans could have hoped for, promising a whole world of terror as the Demon Bear's wrath is unleashed. Fox's last gambles, Deadpool and Logan, paid off in a big way, so hopefully this will prove to be another tremendous success!
